about

The first story, called “Two of a Kind”, is set in the Eastern Cape. Abongile, a young Xhosa woman, is busy cleaning her father’s grave when a stranger appears. The stranger claims that her own father is buried in the grave. The confusion creates a problem not only for Abongile and for the stranger, but also for their ancestors who will not be able to recognize the spirit of the deceased. A power struggle develops between the two women.
The second story is about sacrifice, loyalty and betrayal. In his youth, Salim was an idealistic fighter for freedom and justice. He grew up in a mixed suburb outside Johannesburg during the fifties. As the racial laws became stricter, his family was evicted from their home, he was expelled from school and his father lost his business. These experiences turned him into a communist and a freedom fighter. Eventually, Salim was caught by the authorities and imprisoned for several years. After his release, he is awarded a gold medal by his previous master, Russia. We follow Salim on his journey to the awards ceremony in Moscow. However, he discovers that the Soviet Union has changed. It is now called Russia, a democratic, capitalist state whose value system is at odds with the value system he espoused as a youth and for which he made sacrifices. Salim reflects on his life and ideals and whether his sacrifice was worth it.
