Like all the girls at the House of Gear, Bright has a higher purpose: to be, like, awesome. That means Bright’s engineered body must always look perfect. It means she must be appealing at all times. The minders are watching, after all. The minders see everything.

One of them, Grassly, is on a mission that will lead Bright toward a new future while exposing her to incredible danger. If the other minders catch a whiff of curiosity, rebelliousness or free will, they may decide it’s time to reboot the entire population-just as Bright is discovering a whole new purpose within herself.

Susan Juby brings her trademark humour to a dark, dystopian world in this thrilling new addition to the genre.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid addition to dystopian genre I had never read any of Susan Juby's books, but I really enjoyed this one. I liked how Bright and Fon's characters evolved from being superficial engineered beings whose time could be bought and who only ever thought of appearances into someone who has thoughts and doubts and goals (Bright) and someone who still wants to be the best she can be while taking everything in stride (Fon). It's very fun, full of sci-fi/futuristic elements and the usual dystopian warnings about what could happen to our planet if we don't take care of it. Not very deep, but fast-paced. I'm actually glad that, for once, it doesn't seem like it will be a series. It's just fine as a stand alone. Getting tired of trilogies! But I definitely recommend this one, it's a great read.
