In Broken Harbour, a ghost estate outside Dublin - half-built, half-inhabited, half-abandoned - two children and their father are dead. The mother is on her way to intensive care. Scorcher Kennedy is given the case because he is the Murder squad's star detective. At first he and his rookie partner, Richie, think this is a simple one: Pat Spain was a casualty of the recession, so he killed his children, tried to kill his wife Jenny, and finished off with himself. But there are too many inexplicable details and the evidence is pointing in two directions at once.

Scorcher's personal life is tugging for his attention. Seeing the case on the news has sent his sister Dina off the rails again, and she's resurrecting something that Scorcher thought he had tightly under control: what happened to their family, one summer at Broken Harbour, back when they were children. The neat compartments of his life are breaking down, and the sudden tangle of work and family is putting both at risk . . .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must-read for Irish/British Mystery Fans Tana French is the most compelling author I have read in a long time. She gracefully combines police procedure, suspense and human drama to make a multi-layered story that demands the reader's full attention. This is the first book by French that I read and I have gone on to read many more. Highly recommend. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous book I read a lot of British mysteries and Tara French is one of the best authors of this genre. Unfortunately, I've now read all of her novels so I'm waiting patiently for her to write a new one. This particular book is my favourite one she's written. It has a very quirky story and the atmosphere is intense, complex and gripping. You will not be disappointed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wow! I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It started off pretty slow, but once the story is settled, it is un-putdown-able. The ending was unexpected, the story was complex yet simple to understand, and the characters were easy to compare to. Great, GREAT read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unpredictable psychological mystery I haven't read any of this authors books before and found this book to be very good. Our character is an experienced seasoned detective. He is tasked with a very high profile multiple murder case with his newly appointed inexperienced partner. The author takes us into the minds of all her characters with her writing . I didn't predict the ending of this very well written mystery. Highly recommended if you enjoy detailed detecting mysteries.

Editorial Reviews

A tale about the different facets of obsession and insanity . . . The best yet of French's four excellent thrillers, it leaves its readers "throat-deep in terror" . . . enticing, threatening, atmospheric prose-Observer
