THE earliest ages of that part of the Balkan Peninsula which is now known as Bulgaria are buried in obscurity. Before the time of Philip of Macedon both sides of the Balkans (Hsemus of the Romans) were peopled by a number of savage tribes of Thraco-Illyrian race, and the name of Thrace was generally applied to the whole district from the Danube to the frontier of Macedonia. Philip and his successor, Alexander, brought those tribes under subjection, and incorporated the country with their possessions.
