about

Pattyn Von Stratten is searching for the love she isn’t getting from God or her family in this novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ellen Hopkins.

It all started with a dream. Just a typical fantasy, but for a girl raised in a religious—and abusive—family, a simple dream could be the first step toward eternal damnation. Now Pattyn Von Stratten has questions. Questions about God, and sex, and mostly love. Will she ever find it? Pattyn experiences the first stirrings of passion, but when her father catches her in a compromising position, events spiral out of control.

Pattyn is sent to live with an aunt in the wilds of rural Nevada to find salvation and redemption. What she finds instead is love and acceptance, and for the first time she feels worthy of both—until she realizes that her old demons will not let her go. Those demons lead Pattyn down a path to hell—not to the place she learned about in sacrament meetings, but to an existence every bit as horrifying.

In this gripping and masterful novel told in verse, Ellen Hopkins embarks on an emotional journey that ebbs and flows. From the highs of true love to the lows of loss and despair, Pattyn’s story is utterly compelling. You won’t want this story to end—but when it does, you can find out what’s next for Pattyn in the sequel, Smoke.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favourite book by Hopkins Beautifully written. Hopkins definitely knows how to pull in readers with her writing

Rated 2 out of 5 by from an angsty mess While it may be a good escape from reality for teenagers, I would hope that no teenager would take the story too seriously. The life decisions that are made in this book are questionable, and it is certainly not a good example of a healthy relationship. The ending was disappointing, but I'm giving it two stars because it was unexpected and a breath of fresh air from the angsty tropes used in the rest of the book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from THE BEST OF THE SERIES This book is my personal fave from the series. Hopkins makes you feel the pain and the psyche falling apart through her creative attention to detail and formatting in the book. She makes you feel attached and addicted just like her characters. YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Quick, Decent Read I do think this book is well put together and would appeal to a large audience. I do think it's "good," and I am impressed that the author ended it with such a harsh blow of reality, because in the middle it got a little bit too doe-eyed and fairy-tale-like. It reaches the extreme at some points but I believe that was more for artistic value than anything. It went along well with the poetic writing structure. It's a quick, decent read, but I hope that teenagers wouldn't take this too seriously, as it really isn't an example of healthy relationships or good life decisions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the Read Burned was hard to read at times, but completely worth it. I read the book in one sitting, and by the end was heartbroken for Pattyn. Ellen Hopkins is an insanely beautiful writer, her verse really pulls at the heartstrings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Content heavy, but worth the read You may want to give up at times because of how sad the story is, but do continue! What a well written book. Hopkins is bar none.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Depressing but I love it. Everyone I recommended this novel to in high school cleared it in a day. It was the most popular book and everyone talked about it. We went to a Catholic high school and no one had actually experienced events like this in the religious aspect but we did all experience our first loves... and sadly some experienced loss as Pattyn did. Very easy to relate to and put yourself in the protagonist's shoes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE! This is a story you feel in your heart the entire time you are reading it

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Didn't See This Coming I'm so, so glad this story touches on the shady, negative ramifications of using religion as a crutch. How did Pattyn get here? How could someone have so little tolerance for love? How could a father be so disgusted by his daughter finding happiness? It's a fascinating examination.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I loved this book although the format is weird when you first start as it is in verse. It has become one of my most often read books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it!!! This book ripped my heart out. When I finished I was so close to crying.I absolutely loved it! the format is a little weird when you first start if you are not used to reading in verse (which I wasn't) but it keeps a fast tempo to the story that I really love and look for in most books I read. I 100% recommend this book, although be warned, while it is light and fluffy it also discuses controversial topics such as religion among a few others.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This book is heart wrenching... with every turn of a page your feelings will take you on a roller coaster of love, sadness, happiness, death and more. This book left me heartbroken. It is very rare to find a book that can bring out such emotions, and this one did. It started on a sad note and ended on a sad note, but I think that made the writing that much stronger. This is the first Ellen Hopkins book I've read, and I must say I am a little disappointed. I've heard great things about her books and expected a little more out of this book, although it was written in a fantastic way. The one thing I didn't like about this book was the feeling it gave me. When I read about Pattyn in her house, it seemed really awkward as if I was in the 1970s or something. It felt very western but once she was in school or with her Aunt, then it was as if she was in a normal time. The ending of this book was fantastic. I was close to tears for the pain I felt for Pattyn and her sisters as well as her mother. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy emotional and strong books. Rating: 6.7/10 Parental Rating: 15+

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderfully Written I loved this book, the emotions that are expressed in this book are wonderful. This story coulld be easily relatable by someone, and their is a lot of people who do not say anything about abuse when they should. Awesome book and love the way it's written.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, but Disappointing Ending This book was absolutely amazing. I opened it up and saw that it was all in poems/verses and thought "Oh, No maybe I don't want to read this". I figured what the heck might as well. It was fantastic and I cried like a baby near the end. The ending was incredibly disappointing. I thought she could have ended it differently. Other than that, I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a good novel to read and never let go until you're finished.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You won't be able to put this book down! This book was really amazing. I usually hate books written in verse form but I thought I would give it a try since the story sounded intersting. I loved reading about Pattyn and her relationship with Ethan. When a really unexpected twist came along I was so sad and shocked! After I finished this book I couldn't stop thinking about it for days and I immediately recommended it to all of my friends.
