PART II. POEMS OF BURNS ASSOCIATED WITH CHLORIS. It may now fairly be asked what are the compositions of Burns that evoke an interest in the personality of Chloris, that are associated with, and in which he gave evidence of the sentiments inspired by his poetic model? Robert Chambers, in his Library (4 vols., 1857) Edition, which is by far the best up to the date, speaks of "eleven songs," which he, however, does not altogether clearly indicate, and some of those he gives are imperfect through negligent omissions. Other editions give a few in a haphazard fashion, but Scott Douglas's edition (6 vols., 1891) is beyond challenge the most comprehensive, the fullest in detail, the most complete and accurate in giving the latest versions approved by Burns, together with earlier versions and emendations, and also the most authoritative in its thorough verification of dates, alleged incidents, etc. From Scott Douglas's work I have no difficulty in drawing out a list of thirty poems 46 attributable to Chloris, to which doubtfully an additional one may be added. And as this magnificent edition can only be accessible to some of my readers, I think it will be a gratification to many to have a record list--an index as it were, and an opportunity of comparing that list with such copy of Burns as may be at their command, thus ascertaining t...
