David Sedaris returns with his most deeply personal and darkly hilarious book.

If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong.

When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And life at the Sea Section, as he names the vacation home, is exactly as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself.

With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation toward middle age and mortality. Make no mistake: these stories are very, very funny--it's a book that can make you laugh 'til you snort, the way only family can. Sedaris's powers of observation have never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter unparalleled. But much of the comedy here is born out of that vertiginous moment when your own body betrays you and you realize that the story of your life is made up of more past than future.

This is beach reading for people who detest beaches, required reading for those who loathe small talk and love a good tumor joke. Calypso is simultaneously Sedaris's darkest and warmest book yet--and it just might be his very best.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Talented and Unique in his genre Like his other works, he picks a subject and shares his dark, funny and hilarious observation around the subject. In this book, the subject is his holiday house, which he has called in the Sea Section! I adore his auto-critical PoV, the way he describes his relationships with his partner, his family, and particularly the love he feels for his mother. The one about his tumor is hilarious!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from His humour really resonates with me I don't really know why I never picked up a David Sedaris book before, but it was actually because I was watching his sister on television and was curious to see what he had to offer. After reading this and "Me Talk Pretty One Day" I am fairly convinced that Sedaris and I would be very compatible people, we have the same sense of humour, entitlement, and lack of patience. Then again, however, that probably means that we would hate one another. All this is to say that as reading his books I was often agreeing and laughing out loud. I am aware, however, that his humour is not for everyone so if you still aren't certain just pick up one of his books from the library and try it out first

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not for me It was funny...but; i'm not a fan of how he portrays his father; particularly in the latter half of the book. Seemed disrespectful and...well...a real bummer. Two stars for the times it made me laugh but I won't be recommending this book to others. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Funny and poignant David Sedaris helps you realize that every single person has issues they are dealing, and he describes them with a combination of empathy and hilarity. His stories about his family, particularly his parents are told with honesty; he doesn’t sugar coat much about them but you can tell he loves them. Sometimes I laughed out loud and other times I got a lump in my throat. I hated to see this book end. I’ll read it again befor too long.
