Then they would loiter past the whitewashed, pepper box structure, and halt to watch the long beam of light cleaving the darkness like an angel's sword, and, rousing themselves, descend the cliff road to pace that glorious stretch of sand curving away westward, seeming to both eye and foot the pile of some rich, tawny, carpet spread out and smoothed by invisible hands, while the murmur of the breaking waves, unceasing but never monotonous, filled their souls with melodies as dreamy and as sweet as ever came to the world across the sighing forests and the rushing streams of the great German fatherland; and M. Florimel would forget not only his intention, but his own self, until some suggestive gesture, some playful query would bring him back to both again, but his kisses would fall short on neck or shoulder, his arm seek an elusive waist, his feverish hands clutch at empty air.
