about

In my opinion, it is impossible to create characters until one has spent a long time in studying men, as it is impossible to speak a language until it has been seriously acquired. Not being old enough to invent, I content myself with narrating, and I beg the reader to assure himself of the truth of a story in which all the characters, with the exception of the heroine, are still alive. Eye-witnesses of the greater part of the facts which I have collected are to be found in Paris, and I might call upon them to confirm me if my testimony is not enough. And, thanks to a particular circumstance, I alone can write these things, for I alone am able to give the final details, without which it would have been impossible to make the story at once interesting and complete.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Typical Camille or The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas Fils (not the same person as the well-known Alexandre Dumas) is a well-written love story that did not interest me. This is because at the beginning of the story, the ending is already known, and the story was dull and somewhat typical. The best part about Camille is the way that the protagonists expressed his feelings about the one he loved. The narrator tells his account with Armand in first person, and Armand tells his story in first person as well. The narrator, who was never named, goes to 9 Rue d'Antin to view the furniture and other items that were to be sold to raise money for the creditors of the deceased owner. The narrator inquires about the dead owner of these items, and discovers that it was Marguerite Gautier, an innocent looking courtesan with an expensive lifestyle. He had often seen Marguerite on the streets of Paris, and was very curious to know more about her life. The narrator comes across a person that knew Marguerite very well. Camille is the story of a love affair between Armand Duval, a typical love-struck young man, and Marguerite Gautier. What happened between the time when Armand first laid eyes on Marguerite, until the day she died? 2/5
