When enhanced by the light and glorious flame Of Apollo's rich gold to thy woodlands I came, Viewed, soul enchanted, thy beauteous flowers Colored by wood nymphs in rich forest bowers, Sauntered alone by thy soft sighing streams, Heard the weird music with which the bush teems, Culled there sweet blossoms and yearned for the touch To transfer their beauty with color and brush, Prayed for the art, inspiration divine, To mould their rich charms in lyrical rhyme. Thy shade was too soft, thy color too bright, Mellow thy songs like the songs of the night, In symphonies full where southern winds blow O'er upland and glen in musical flow; The peace that they brought, the rest that they set Like a halo of light shall I never forget, Though oft far I wander still their soft balm Recurs to the sense with its forested charm; Recalls to mine ear the monotone breaks Of silver lipped ripples on silver shored lakes. Emboldened by love for the trill of thy birds I traversed thy depths to learn their song words; Stole 'neath thy rafters, listened enchanted, Heard sylvan lore in glades songster-haunted; Melodies caught from waterfalls roaring--Melodies sparkling like dews of the morning--Glistening and laughing o'er water worn stones, Fire flashing like rubies from Araby zones, Blended with murmur of leaves zephyr fanned, The songs that I heard in that beautiful land.
