Carl Stephens Ell, Dean of Northeastern College, Engineering School, was born November 14, 1887, at Staunton, Indiana.

He lived on a farm near the village of Staunton and attended the Village schools until he was fourteen years old. He then enrolled in De Pauw Academy at Greencastle, Indiana. He completed the regular course in the Academy in three years and the scientific course in De Pauw University during the next three years. While at the University he was a member of the D club. For three years a member of the Varsity Basketball Team, an officer in the Y. M. C. A., on the staff of the University weekly, the staff of the year book and an active member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity.
