Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last!

But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, Our Hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!

"Rich in humor, acutely observant, Dahl lets his imagination rip in fairyland." —The New York Times

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Read Every child's dream come true! I read this as an adult, but can still see the magic. How exciting to be a guest in a candy factory. LIked the contrast between the different children in the story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magical There is something so magical about what would happen when Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake would come together and this is, of course, no exception. Getting lost in the chocolate factory never gets old.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magical Story This story hits on every child's fantasy - a visit to a magic candy factory complete with a chocolate river. This story really lets your imagination go wild and is a great story to get kids interested in reading. Once you read the book, I suggest sitting down and watching the classic Gene Wilder movie version.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delicious I love this book. I remember the wonder I felt as a grade 3 student listening to my teacher read this at carpet time. I recently read it to my grade 3 daughter and she loved it. I loved it almost as much as an adult as I did then.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Chocolate Fantasy This book was one of the choices for my book club in January. I don't think I've ever actually read the book, which is surprising, since I've seen the Gene Wilder movie at least a dozen times. What a fun book to read. I curled up in bed and got lost in fantasy. I tried reading it to my nephew and niece, 4 1/2 and 2 1/2....but it's a bit too advanced for them. Maybe next year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scrumdidilyumptious! Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is truly one of the best children's books of the 20th century. Roald Dahl has written a story full of humour, unbelievable situations, a bit of sarcasm...and most importantly, chocolate! The story of a young boy named Charlie is exciting, heartwarming and funny. Poor Charlie would like nothing more than to eat and help out his family. Then one day, Willy Wonka, the mysterious owner of the local chocolate factory decides to invite some children to tour the factory by hiding golden tickets in some of his chocolate bars. Once at the factory, the other children seem to meet unfortunate situations due to their misbehaviour. However, Charlie proves to be the nicest child in the group. Some worry that the story might be disturbing to some younger children, however the book is not nearly as scary as the movies are. If children can handle the movie, they'll love the book. This 40th anniversary hardcover is a great keepsake and has awesome illustrations and a large font so it's easy to read. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone from children to adults. It's a classic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Book An excellent book that teaches children important lessons, especially to listen to older people. When 4 children didn't listen to Mr. Wonka, they were punished in diabolical, yet funny ways. Three cheers for Roald Dahl!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WONDERFUL, A MUST READ This book is the best children's book ever written in my opinion. No child should grow up without reading it or having it read to them. I was fortunate that my teacher read it to our class in school and I have recommended it to everyone I know ever since. A+
