Teddy "Chex" Clark has been racing cars since he was seven. He's always dreamed of driving professionally. But when an old friend calls him out of the blue and offers him the chance to make his dream a reality, Teddy can’t help but ask himself—is he ready?

From his first go-kart race to his days at racing academy, the road to the biggest race in Teddy’s life is anything but smooth.

Along the way, he makes friends who support and shape him as a driver, and he battles those who will do anything to stand in his way.

He discovers secrets about his past that force him to question his destiny.

And when he's confronted with the dangerous realities of racing at the highest level, Teddy must face the ultimate question: is it all worth it?

Christopher Hinchcliffe draws inspiration from the life of his brother, Canadian IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe, to tell an exciting and moving story that pulls you into the driver’s seat for a ride you’ll never forget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved it! It is an easy and enjoyable read that feels targeted to a Young Adult audience, which I think is completely appropriate for relating to the main character. The last flashback in the Chex epilogue was a perfect ending to tie the whole story together. Teddy's story line seems to be wrapped up cleanly with the end of one major chapter of his life, but could easily be continued as he grows up if there was ever a sequel, not to mention the confused teenage love interests that could be unraveled (or tangled) further at the same time. My favourite parts were the racing scenes, especially the last one. I could clearly imagine the emotions Teddy was feeling, and could honestly picture someone like James Hinchcliffe telling the story in attention-grabbing detail for each corner and each passing maneuver. I think this will be a big hit for the race fans that like to immerse themselves in a believable story to which they can relate, and for anyone curious about a racecar driver's perspective (even if you're not into watching it at all). It would make a great audio-book too!

Editorial Reviews

"Once you start, it's really hard to put down - as soon as I'd finished one chapter, I immediately wanted to go on and read the next.""With Chasing Checkers, I can feel the authenticity in the story, catch the nods to racing history, and feel like I'm reading the story of any number of young drivers I've worked with and watched go up through the ranks over the years from karting to IndyCar.""A great read for anyone that is a racing fan, wants to read a good story that will give you and idea of what racing is really like, or just wants to enjoy a good story!""I'm not a particular driving fan but Christopher Hinchcliffe does a great job of making the finer details of racing both explicable and interesting to the general reader."
