Can the future ever erase the past? Rose has a Cross mother and a Nought father in a society where the pale-skinned Noughts are treated as inferiors and those with dual heritage face a life-long battle against deep-rooted prejudices. Sephy, her mother, has told Rose virtually nothing about her father, but as Rose grows up she becomes determined to find out more about her parentage. As Rose takes her first steps away from Sephy and into her father’s world, she finds herself drawn inexorably into danger.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will not disappoint!!!! After two enthralling books about the ongoing battle between the dark-skinned Crosses and the pale-skinned Noughts, Malorie Blackman has returned yet again with another one. Checkmate is the breathtaking conclusion to the powerful trilogy that began with the promising creation of Noughts and Crosses, and later, Knife Edge. This time, Malorie Blackman's expert story telling has returned with a vengeance. Better than both its predecessors, Checkmate will anchor its amazing controversies of plot within your heart and will stay embedded in your mind and soul for years to come. After a stunning conclusion to Knife Edge, Checkmate takes on the perspective of five of the main characters: Jude, Callie Rose, Sephy, Jasmine, and Meggie. Readers are first introduced to the main conflict which takes place nearly sixteen years after the end of Knife Edge. Callie Rose is not on speaking terms with her mother, Sephy, and meanwhile, unbeknownst to her family, Callie is planning on a suicide bombing under the hand of the Liberation Militia. And what a surprise: the Liberation Militia's plans are all the handiwork of the ever-powerful Jude McGregor, Callie's own uncle. At the same time, Callie's grandmother, Jasmine has caught the scent of the troubles in her daughter's and grandaughter's lives, and is plotting revenge on Jude. Readers are left hanging after the stunning introduction and then are taken on a journey back to the past, a time when Callie Rose is merely at the young age of seven. Switching character perspectives the whole time, Malorie Blackman takes the reader on a trip through the life of Callie Rose and fills us in on how the family's troubles have grown accordingly with Callie's age. Checkmate is the most insightful, dramatic, and emotional of the must-read Noughts and Crosses trilogy. Teens and adults alike, if you have a mind for adventure, drama, and intensity, this is definitely your read. I guarantee you that this book will not disappoint!
