about

Kevin Kwan, bestselling author of Crazy Rich Asians, is back with a wickedly funny new novel of social climbing, secret emails, art world scandal, lovesick billionaires, and the outrageous story of what happens when Rachel Chu, engaged to marry Asia's most eligible bachelor, discovers her birthfather.
On the eve of her wedding to Nicholas Young, heir to one of the greatest fortunes in Asia, Rachel should be over-the-moon. She has a flawless Asscher cut diamond from JAR, a wedding dress she loves more than anything found in the salons of Paris, and a fiancée willing to sacrifice his entire inheritance in order to marry her. But Rachel still mourns the fact that her birthfather, a man she never knew, won't be able to walk her down the aisle. Until: a shocking revelation draws Rachel in to a world of Shanghai splendor beyond anything she has ever imagined. Here we meet Carlton, a Ferrari-crashing bad boy known for Prince Harry-like antics; Colette, a celebrity girlfriend chased by fevered paparazzi; and the man Rachel has spent her entire life waiting to meet: her father. Meanwhile, Singapore's It Girl Astrid Leong is shocked to discover that there is a downside to having a newly-minted Tech Billionaire husband. A romp through Asia's most exclusive clubs, auction houses, and estates, China Rich Girlfriend brings us into the elite circles of Mainland China, introducing a captivating cast of characters, and offering an inside glimpse at what it's like to be gloriously, crazily, China-rich.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from READ IT! Had to order this (and the third book) as soon as I finished the first (Crazy Rich Asians). It was so good to see the story continue on with all the beloved characters from the first book...and a few new ones. An incredibly entertaining read. I devoured all three books in under a week....and was pretty sad when I was done!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the first I loved this book more than Crazy Rich Asians. I can't wait to read book number 3. Once again Rachel and Nick are in for a crazy ride. Will be sad once I finish the third book of the seriers

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best in the series ! This one kept me reading non stop. I love discovering and learning about this other world of Asia! I've been to Asia before but just as a regular traveler ;) and it's amazing and shocking to hear of how much money they have and that it's out there. That said, the suspense was good and I like that the date and characters was written at the top of every chapter. I highly recommend

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Good Sequel The second novel in the trilogy was as much fun to read as the first. I laughed at the craziness of it all, and enjoyed the extravagant nature of the new wealth in China. Once again the romance in the story is interwoven with humour and wit as Kwan describes the outrageous behaviour of those with far more money than they can spend in a lifetime. Love, however, is not always easy and Kwan shows us this in his description of Astrid and her beau. And even though Rachel and Nicky are moving towards the altar, obstacles still stand in their way. What I enjoyed most in this novel is the continuation of the stories that began in the first. Not all problems are resolved in the end (there is a third novel in the series) but some are – and mostly to my satisfaction. The second novel in the trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend did not disappoint me. My attention was kept throughout and I completed the story in 2 days. Definitely a perfect read for those who enjoy romance with lots of humour.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! This is a great continuation of Nick and Rachel's story. This was a great book to read if you enjoyed "Crazy Rich Asians".

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyed! Great sequel to the first, at some points was confused but all together was a good read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was ok I loved the first book. This was a nice continuation of the story of Nick and Rachel. I liked the story but I thought some of the quirks (eg. reading the translation of slangs) that made the first book fun to read was now kind of tiresome. I'd still recommend it because it was a nice sequel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved It! I was worried to read this one because I heard that it was a bit slower, but boy was I wrong. I loved the sequel! It was so interesting to read about other characters and not just focusing on Rachel and Nick. I loved reading the Astrid's and Kitty Pong's stories and I LOVE Carlton's character. What a hilarious sequel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! This book did not disappoint! I was hoping it would be just as good as Crazy Rich Asians and it was! I loved getting to learn more about the characters and the new ones that were introduced in this book were just as entertaining. Can't wait to check out the last book in the series to see how everything ends! Would highly recommend this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great continuation I couldn't wait to find out what happened next in this series and China Rich Girlfriend did not disappoint. Loved it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just As Good As The First China Rich Girlfriend - the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians - is, in many ways, funnier than the first. I thoroughly enjoyed following Nick and Rachel's journey into marriage, learning about how Astrid, Michael and Charlie are all doing, and seeing more of Rachel's father and his family. Given that the Astrid/Michael/Charlie storyline was my favorite in Crazy Rich Asians, I was thrilled that their storyline was an important one in this follow-up novel. While this was close to being a 5 star read, I didn't like how rushed the ending became. A lot of loose ends only got tied up in a final article which speculated about the lives of these characters. Then again, this is only the second book in a trilogy, so I can't fault the author too much for not wrapping everything up neatly. 4.5 stars for this delightful sequel by Kevin Kwan

Rated 4 out of 5 by from As good as the first! I loved this book! Normally sequels can be a little disappointing but this one was just as fun and crazy as the first novel! So many characters and so many crazy antics they get into. I felt like this one focused a lot of Astrid, and Rachel and Nick got more of a secondary storyline up until part three. However, the characters are all so well developed and interesting that it was refreshing to get into the background and lives of others. I can't wait to read the final instalment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A little more... tabloidy? I loved Crazy Rich Asians and I was super excited to dive into this one. It feels like Nick & Rachel were an afterthought in this book though. And I feel like we lost a little of what made me fall in love with Rachel to begin with. Still a fun read though and would recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Continued Success After Crazy Rich Asians, I was afraid that the sequel wouldn't live up to the first, but the antics of all the characters continue to give me joy and laughter. Nicholas's mother reminds me of my grandmother, and that says it all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bit more personality than the last one One thing I couldn't shake about the first novel is how passive Rachel Chu was as a character. Everything just seemed to happen to her but as we get to know more about her family ties, it's nice to see her interact with the new characters. There were some laugh out loud moments in this one.
Date published: 2018-08-01
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hilarious This saga follows up on the hilarious story Kwan wrote about the obscenely wealthy orientals. It'd just as funny as the former book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Second novel in series as good as the first Couldn't wait to read the second novel in the series "Crazy Rich Asians". It had some great twists and turns. Comedy was as good or better than the first. Ordered second and third books at same time after I read the first. I lived in Singapore and people, settings, food and expressions are true to life. High society at it's funniest and most entertaining. A modern day version of "Dallas" (TV series)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from cliff hangar warning Keeps you on your toes kind of book. The footnotes are both informative and hilarious. Coming from an Asian background makes a lot of the traditions and rules very relatable. Descriptive words paint a beautiful picture of each and every setting, character, and scene. Leaves you craving more on a cliff hangar

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sequel This sequel made it so I couldn't get to the third book fast enough. Loved the culture and respect for diversity in these books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from could not put it down! I absolutely love this series. Funny, witty and fabulous. It's rare to find books that are about Asian culture/people so this was so refreshing. I thoroughly enjoy being able to relate to the traditions and cultural and historical references to the eccentricities of the Asian Auntie. Love!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good read, not amazing I like this series, I'm just not in love with the author's writing. It kind of reads like a stream of thought, unedited so some parts have me cringing and re-writing the sentence in my head. But the plot and characters are funny and enjoyable.
Date published: 2018-05-22
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Even funnier than the first book! Kevin Kwan's writing style is so entertaining. I actually liked this one more than Crazy Rich Asians, but both are great! This book introduces some new characters, and we get to know more about Rachel's family. I could not stop laughing at some parts!
Date published: 2018-04-30
Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you loved the first you'll love this one! I found this one narrowed in on characters more than the first so it was easier to follow story lines. It seemed to pick the favourite characters from book 1 to focus on more. This series is an easy and enjoying read! #plumreview

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Couldn't Finish It I read the first one and, while a bit painful at times, I thought it was overall, some good stupid fun. But I can't get through the second one - it's just too much of the same stupid people doing stupid things.
Date published: 2018-04-26
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharp. Funny This was the first of the three books that I read. Difficult to keep up with the characters, and family ties, but finally got a greater sense after three book. The family chart in the first few pages was quite helpful. I learned about cultural aspects of China and Asia- especially the culinary arts as there are many references to food, and delicacies. I was quite impressed with the author's knowledge of other arts, especially as related to high-end, on trend decor, and design.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good time, but not as good as the first Whereas I was obsessed with Rachel and Nick in the first one, to me this was all about Astrid and Charlie.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from just loved diving right back into the rich & fabulous i say it's always hard to live up to the first book .. i mean (unless it's the Harry Potter series). but i simply saw it is Kevin, picked up where they left off. the scandal and drama was different and still outrageous, but i appreciate that. i still found is hilarious and so very entertaining! you simply cannot be disappointed since it's a brand new plot. i think Kevin did a wonderful job tying in Rachel's 'new life' into Nick's. i do enjoy it and i love that they're going to make a movie from the original, that's when i know if this book really translates onto screen. i highly recommend this series if you haven't indulged into it. an eyeopener to the world of crazy rich asians, think of it as Kardashian rich, but more dramatic (a little more classy) and in Asia.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Meh I did, it's done! It only took me two and a half weeks, but I finished it. I'm not entirely sure why I picked this book up, having not been blown away by the prequel. This one was equally as tedious although quirky at times. It was a struggle to keep each character's story straight and I didn't overly enjoy them anyway. If the entire novel focused solely on Rachel and Nick, I think it would be a lot more entertaining.
Date published: 2017-06-09
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyed this but not as much as Crazy Rich Asians This was a good read overall and I liked how Rachel's side of the family was the centre of this novel. Could have done without the Kitty side-story but all in all another good book by Kevin Kwan.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Engaging but ultimately unbelievable This story, sequel to Crazy Rich Asians, includes many of the same characters, two years later. It is a compelling, gossipy story that is hard to put down, and it has quite a different perspective from what I'm used to reading. Without telling too much of the story, the book still focuses on Rachel and Nick as the carriers of the storyline (and to a lesser degree, Astrid and Michael). However, what made each of these characters sort of unique in the first book all kind of disappeared in this book. Rachel, often complimented for her "being so different from the other girls" and "being so American" in this book doesn't come off as a convincing down-to-earth Californian New Yorker, rather a slightly different Singaporean; Nick never really does come across as the "Duke" that he is said to hold himself like; the forces acting on Astrid to change don't really match the tremendous change that her character seems to have gone through (or maybe her character never was properly established in the first book?); and Michael becomes irrational in a way that doesn't support the concept of him as a successful business person. I understand that this book is supposed to show how money changes people over time, but in the end, the characters evolved from somewhat understandable people into people convenient to fit the story. I liked the story, but there is more to be done in the development of the characters and explanation of how they change with the world that is constructed for them here.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it While China Rich Girlfriend is technically the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians, you can read this as a standalone, which is what I did. Kevin Kwon throws you head first into the extravagant and rich life of these rich asians, and I can't lie and say that it didn't give me a headache. I was so shocked and mesmerised at the same time at the reality of their lives. One line that really got to me was said among a couple of the older asian women about someone within their community: "Bernard has no money. He only gets about ten million a year to live on," Carol confirmed. That's ten million USD a year, by the way. I loved how we were able to see how these people live, and that it's not all roses and 100 thousand dollar Birkin bags. Initially I have to say I was OVERWHELMED by the sheer amount of people in this book. I do think if you read the first book, by the second book you would atlas know 50% of the people. But I didn't and it took me a while to get to know who's important enough for me to really know and who isn't. I wish there was a family tree chart of all the asian clans involved. Once we weed out all the unimportant characters, it finally got interesting and exciting. I couldn't put the book down and read it in a day or two. Several different plots are interwoven or stand alone in the book, and I have to say I enjoyed every single one. This is a rarity because I always have favourites and stories I don't like when it comes to multiple POV books. China Rich Girlfriend was a book I kept on recommending to so many of my friends and really stuck with me. Maybe because I was so unaccustomed to their lifestyle. The rich asians are seriously on a completely different level from other rich people. One thing a publicist at Random House said that stuck for me about this book is "There's rich , then there's China rich". I completely agree and feel like anyone who picks it up will get taken for a very interesting and exciting ride, especially if you are already into asian cultures, like I am. I definitely recommend this book to everyone and I can't wait to pick up Crazy Rich Asians and read that. I hope Kevin Kwon continue writing these fascinating and unique books; I really enjoy his storytelling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Crazy Crazy Good Read Kevin Kwan has done it again. I enjoyed Crazy Rich Asians so much that I was a little anxious for his sophomore book. Over the Top does not even begin to describe this book. I LOVED every single character in this book. I loved how I felt when I read this (giddy with a few jumpy claps thrown in). I loved how the lives of the characters revolve around what they are wearing, driving, or where they rank on China’s Richest list (or which list is the most accurate for that matter) down to the minutest detail. So much so that Collette’s (her father sits within the Top 10 on either list) response to what Astrid ( Top 3) was wearing to a party made me spit out my coffee I was laughing so hard. This a great fun read for anyone wanting to indulge in a little escapism for a few hours.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely loved it! I bought this book not expecting much because as we all know, the second book is usually worse than the first book. However, contrary to what I was expecting, China Rich Girlfriend is even better than Crazy Rich Asians. The first book spent a lot of time introducing characters and the past, but the second book dove right into it. Nick's family doesn't make as much of an appearance in this one as it focuses more on Rachel's new found father and brother. I was disappointed that Nick's mother did not show up as much, but when she does, she certainly makes an appearance that'll make you laugh out loud in disbelief. This one's a juicy one.

Editorial Reviews

"Mr. Kwan has good aim with his fashion world―and ego-skewering shivs." ―The New York Times "Delicious . . . nuanced (and savage) in its social deconstruction—and even more fun [than Crazy Rich Asians]." ―Maclean's"Take a Jane Austen novel, combine it with Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and set it in the glittering capitals of Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore. What have you got? This deliciously fun follow-up to Kwan's bestselling Crazy Rich Asians... a field guide to Asia's uberwealthy echelon and comic satire at its best."—People Magazine"Welcome to the world of China Rich Girlfriend, which picks up a few years after the events of Kevin Kwan's frothy 2013 best-seller, Crazy Rich Asians. In accordance with the Law of Sequels, it's more over-the-top than its predecessor—which is saying something . . . [China Rich Girlfriend is] entertaining . . . buoyant." ―Entertainment Weekly "The summer's funniest beach read." —Vanity Fair“I loved China Rich Girlfriend… Like Gossip Girl and Dynasty and the royal family of England all at the same time. Kwan’s characters behave hideously—and it’s hilarious.” —Elaine Lui, Flare"The summer's funniest beach read. When Crazy Rich Asians hit shelves in peak beach-read season two summers ago, readers ate up its urestrained and uproarious fictional depictions of the opulent lives of Asia's super elite. . . China Rich Girlfriend follow[s] the same multitentacled clan and their world-traveling, high-spending, and backstabbing antics." –Lauren Christensen, Vanity Fair"China Rich Girlfriend,  Kevin Kwan's frothy sequel to his debut novel, Crazy Rich Asians, revisits the world of Hong Kong's and Singapore's super-super-elite. . . . these sharply observed books have an insider's authority. Girlfriend is also so diverting that it (almost) made me forget that my seatmate on a recent flight from New York to Dubai was muttering to himself nonstop." ―Condé Nast Traveler"An entertaining look at an unbelievable world of consumption. . . . China Rich Girlfriend has . . .  fun with swagger and style . . . Genre fiction is probably richer for it." ―Metro "In this year's best beach reading, Jane Austen meets Singapore . . . There's no timely cocktail I'd rather recommend than China Rich Girlfriend . . . As frothy as the egg whites on the sort of cocktail you should drink while reading Kwan's books. But if you need to assuage your guilt about summer reading with a little intellectual patina, Kwan has you covered too; His peek into this rarified world is spiked with tart observations about old and new money, the nuances of racism and the way they all interact . . . Fizzy, highly entertaining." ―The Washington Post "In this year’s best beach reading, Jane Austen meets Singapore… There’s no timely cocktail I’d rather recommend than China Rich Girlfriend… As frothy as the egg whites on the sort of cocktail you should drink while reading Kwan’s books. But if you need to assuage your guilt about summer reading with a little intellectual patina, Kwan has you covered too; His peek into this rarified world is spiked with tart observations about old and new money, the nuances of racism and the way they all interact… A cheeky reminder that those who think they can’t make a romance or a comedy of manners work in an entirely non-white setting are not just lying or kidding themselves, but wasting the almost gluttonous opportunities available to storytellers who stretch beyond convention… Fizzy, highly entertaining.” –Alyssa Rosenberg, The Washington Post “As the real China rich dig their nails into the world of the wealthy and wasteful, Kwan sharpens his with another acerbic yet affectionate examination of Asian uber-elite social mores, still largely invisible in Western popular culture… The novel is filled with jaw-dropping accounts of opulence… and showdowns worthy of an episode of "Gossip Girl."… China Rich Girlfriend is a crazy parade through the lives of the aspirational elite. It's also a rich portrait of Asia's real obsession with consumerism and its economic rise, one whose trajectory, like Kwan's, is not yet complete.”–Nicole Lee, Los Angeles Times “Those Crazy Rich Asians are back as a mix of old and new characters in Kwan's new novel, China Rich Girlfriend... The book brings the foibles of the wealthy into a new setting: China. It reflects the ascendance of a new elite — the product of the booming economy of mainland China. This fresh crop of billionaires form a new strata of Asia's one percent, what Kwan likes to call the "China Rich."… Kwan's characters are powerful and attractive, living in the lap of luxury.” –All Things Considered, NPR weekend  "Lifestyles of the rich and famous, China-style. A follow to Kwan's lively debut, Crazy Rich Asians, this new book delivers more over-the-top consumption in Asia's most exclusive locale.” –The Houston Chronicle   “Kevin Kwan has a new book coming out soon. It's called China Rich Girlfriend, and if you don't know why this is shriek-worthy news, allow me to introduce you to Kwan's first novel, Crazy Rich Asians, [a] gloriously, irreverently fun and dishy novel.” –Roxane Gay, NPR“Kwan returns with an equally good-natured, catty-as-hell sequel to his bestselling roman à clef about China's new and old money dynasties. For those not cued in, Kwan's tone is breakneck and utterly disarming—part Oscar Wilde, part Judith Krantz, part Arthur Frommer . . . Hilarious . . . Over-the-top and hard to stop.” –Kirkus“Kwan’s latest follows in the footsteps of his wildly imaginative Crazy Rich Asians but adds even more conspicuous consumption and over-the-top behavior… Resplendent with gorgeous description …. The dialog is always top-notch. There are many fascinating substories... A sprinkling of footnotes adds local expressions, insightful asides, and Kwan’s own snarky personal comments. Among the many laugh-out-loud incidents are examples of the extreme cheapness of some of these ultrawealthy people and tidbits about their staff… The conclusion offers up additional shocks and surprises that will have readers clamoring for more. Those who enjoy splendid writing and getting a glimpse at how the other half (probably much less than 50 percent) lives will delight in this book.” —Library Journal (Starred Review) "The novel offers a second helping of the social-climbing, jet-setting, wildly scandalous world that propelled Kwan's first book to the top of the New York Times bestseller list. With one exception—somehow it manages to outstrip the earlier work's excesses." ―Women's Wear Daily“Singapore-based sensation Kevin Kwan follows up his smash success, Crazy Rich Asians, which is currently being made into a film, with another sure-to-be hit. As with his first novel, Kwan takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the lives—and nuptial preparations—of absurdly wealthy society folks in mainland China.” —Readers Digest Canada“The much-anticipated sequel to Crazy Rich Asians (a great summer read in its own right), China Rich Girlfriend continues the tale of Rachel Chu and her upcoming nuptials to Nicholas Young, heir to one of the greatest fortunes in Asia... With the same hilarity and scandalous narrative as the first novel, China Rich Girlfriend will not disappoint both fans and newcomers to the series.” —Town & Country “Last year Kevin Kwan introduced summer fun readers to a cast of characters entirely foreign but somehow familiar…In China Rich Girlfriend, he continues that story but throws into the mix the recently acquired fortunes of China that take to easy street like it’s a superhighway… They offer a taste of Asian opulence served with skewering humor. Delectable wretched excess.”–New York Daily News “What happens when the young woman destined to marry Asia’s most eligible bachelor gets derailed by a shocking family secret? That’s what Kwan (Crazy Rich Asians) examines in this amusing, whirlwind novel about Rachel Chu, who discovers her long-lost father and falls headlong into a Shanghai — the fashion! the social climbing! the secrets! — wilder than her wildest dreams.” —The Miami Herald“Very enjoyable... Just as funny as Crazy Rich Asians, this globe-spanning tale of excess includes enough snootiness and class snobbery to fill a multitude of designer handbags. It’s a modern-day comedy of manners that highlights what it means to be ‘China rich’ as well as the things that money can never buy.” –Minneapolis Star Tribune
