about

Since its publication in 1994, Hiromi Goto's Chorus of Mushrooms has been recognized as a true classic of Asian Canadian literature. One of the initial entries in NeWest Press' long-running Nunatak First Fiction Series, Hiromi Goto's inaugural outing was recognized at the Commonwealth Writers' Prizes as the Best First Book in the Caribbean and Canadian regions that year, as well as becoming co-winner of the Canada-Japan book award.

Goto's acclaimed feminist novel is an examination of the Japanese Canadian immigrant experience, focusing on the lives of three generations of women in modern day Alberta to better understand themes of privilege and cultural identity. This reprinting of the landmark text includes an extensive introduction and interview with the author, talking about the impact the book has had on the Canadian literary landscape.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mysticism Meets Murasaki Set in rural Alberta, this light-hearted, mystical novel recounts the immigrant experience through the conflict between three generations of Japanese Canadian women--a grandmother who will not speak English, a daughter who refuses speak Japanese, and a granddaughter torn between the two extremes and struggling with her identity as a Japanese Canadian. As they struggle to establish themselves in their not-so-new community, they make new accomodations not only to the past but to each other. Hiromi Goto has truly captured the essence of the difficulty one encounters in an adopted country. An excellent read: light, entertaining, and full of surprises. Attention: watch for an 80-year-old grandmother doing gymnastics and bustin' broncos!
