The recollection of Him harmoniously blends with all we behold, or enjoy, or suffer even, for in that he is gracious, or hope for; and leads to that identity of will with Him which is the highest attainment and happiest state of created being. O! what can move and animate the soul, if not the idea of God, as delineated by Christ and his apostles--that God who is the Father, who is love? Why have our hearts such capacity of feeling, if not to receive the impression of his goodness? How full of all that can attract and fix the affections is his paternal character! What boundless excellence! What long-suffering patience! What unspeakable condescension! What infinite, eternal, and almighty benevolence! Nor let it be imagined that the spirit of devotion, sustained and expressed by acts of worship, and by none more than the serious use of the Lord's Prayer, will evaporate in mere feeling. It will preserve the mind from that trifling which debases a rational creature, purify it from unhallowed passions, sooth under unmerited suffering, and calm even the terrors of guilt; aid the progress of virtue, surround its possessor with something of the Divine glory, and in a future state the righteous will find it one great source i of their unspeakable joy, as, with exalted beings, they surround the throne of God in blissful adoration.
