Excerpt: ... You will not complain, I hope, that it is a subject more suitable for a lecture than a sermon. I do not know why we should be so careful to distinguish between the one and the other. I fancy it is very much a matter of convention. Carlyle once said that "A nation's true Bible was its own history." And certainly if the Hebrew Bible, which, as you know, is largely taken up, not only with the revelation of spiritual truth for all mankind, but with a record of God's dealings with a particular nation in the matter of its constitutional history and civil development, be a cosmopolitan Bible, or rather the first part of one, I do not see, unless we have ceased to believe in God's continual government of the world, why there should not be national Bibles also; and I can imagine no more proper or nobler task for a clergy than the perpetual shaping and elaborating of such a national monument. And, at any rate, of this I am quite certain, that I shall be doing no dishonour to that greater Bible which rightly we reverence as the very word of God if only I can make any one of you realise the religious sense of all history, if only I can succeed in bringing home to you the fact that God is not less a King over England than He was over Judea, that if He was a national Redeemer once He probably is so still; that if in days gone by He led His chosen people Israel out of Egyptian slavery by the hand of His servant Moses, He has led also His chosen people England out of serfdom into free citizenship and through all the social vicissitudes of their history by the hand of chosen servants, prophets, poets, reformers, statesmen, kings; that, in fact, England has had her divine Genesis and Exodus, her Chronicles of Kings and Prophets, and that finally we each one of us are only ...
