The inspirational memoir of the Canadian boxer who fought some of the greatest heavyweights in history, including Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, but lost everything outside the ring

From a tough Toronto childhood as the only son of immigrant parents, through a twenty-three-year career that earned him induction into the World Boxing Hall of Fame, to the public tragedies that decimated his family long after the cheering stopped, George Chuvalo tells his life story as only he can.

Chuvalo traded punches with several all-time greats—Joe Frazier, George Foreman and, most famously, Muhammad Ali (twice)—yet in nearly one hundred bouts, he was never knocked down. But his biggest fight came after he hung up his gloves, when drugs and suicide devastated his family. Chuvalo is both a top-flight boxing memoir and a poignant, hard-hitting story of coping with unimaginable loss.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book! I bought this book for my hubby for Xmas & he has read it in 4 days. Now I need to say that this is a man who does not read much. Maybe 2 or 3 books a year & they usually take him about a month. He has not stopped talking about it either. So if you want a good book for your sports minded guy, this would be it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A Fighter's Life This book needs to be taken with large grain of salt. In the book George blames everyone but himself. When you are boxer it is you against the other man in the ring. He might have been a skilled boxer that stayed on his feet but the bottom line is that the only thing that really maters is that HE didnt win the big fights. George should stop making excusings and take responsibility and stop wrongly blaming others for his failures. When reading this book one should remember that there are three sides to every story. This is a book by an intelligent but very sad and dillusional man.
