When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok....has potential It was an ok light quick read. The world the author created is more intriguing then any of her actual characters. We only get a small glimpse into its intricacies which is somewhat disappointing, but since this is the first book and needs to set up a lot, hopefully she will delve more into that in successive novels. I appreciate that it is a different take on an old theme, I always enjoy seeing new creative worlds using themes we are familiar with. That said, the story itself felt like it was kind of jumping around or being rushed from place to place, and I was left with the feeling that much was left out - such as reactions from the characters who seemed often to completely forget about very important events happening in their lives. I don't feel the characters had enough depth to them, leaving me as a reader never fully invested in them. The language coming out of these 15 (almost 16) year olds is positively baffling to me. In fact, the way all the characters speak is somewhat off - if it was just one character you could be left with the impression that it was a personality trait of that specific character, but instead I am left thinking that the author is constantly trying to impress the reader with her vocabulary with the result that I am left being taken out of the novel rather then sucked in. Also, I found the points at which the author chose to insert descriptive elements a little off putting- it didn't seem to flow, but more like made the action pause for description. Some turns of phrase left me scratching my head such as -his voice was as soft as cats fur- or -the smell hit her like the swipe of a cats padded paw- or something to that affect. I just find it odd to describe one sense using a completely different sense. That all said for a first time novel it has some potential and some great ideas. I will likely read the next in the series to see how it all progressed and grew.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from why all the hype? I was very unimpressed. The characters were unlikable and the story was boring and slow moving. I don't even know why I read it right through till the end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from CITY OF BONES REVIEW The City of Bones is an amazing book that at some parts made me cry, scream, or laugh. Never have I read a book that shows what a hard-working author can do. In this book Cassandra, or Cass lives a pretty ordinary life, unil one day at the club she witnesses a demon being murdered. This leads to her finding out soo many puzzel piecses that most would have though of lost. I highly recomend this for people aged 11-to the day you die. Because of this book Cassandra Claire is now one of my favorite authors with Rick Riordan and Judy Blume. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Sienna
