about

Kiera Smith is not like ordinary Genetically Engineered Persons . . .

The Bureau of Alien Affairs needed a special GEP agent with empathic abilities to handle their most extraordinary assignments—and a rogue geneticist saw to it that Kiera fit their specifications. But she turned out stronger, faster, smarter, and more impervious to harm than anyone anticipated. A reluctant "superhero," Kiera wishes she were normal, but it is not to be.

On Orpheus Two, the indigenous Buri race faces extinction, a prospect the powerful Dynatec corporation welcomes and, in fact, may be actively hastening. It is Kiera's job to protect these beautiful, exotic aliens . . . and to discover what there is on Orpheus Two that Dynatec feels is worth killing for.

But the magnetic allure of Thor, the breathtaking Buri leader, is proving a dangerous distraction. And now, to save Thor's people, Kiera will need a power she's never before possessed—something hidden in the unexplored recesses of her heart.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Read - Loved It I bought this a while ago but had not gotten around to reading it from my multitude of 'read piles'. I am sorry I waited so long. BookWyrm's review is pretty accurate as the plot line goes, so I won't rehash that. I found this book well written, the storyline moves along well and the characters are themselves are likable. I picked it up this morning as a coffee read and did not put it down until it was done even with interruptions from my 6 year old. Instantly searched hoping for a #2 though the book has good closure. if you like Linnea Sinclair, Elizabeth Moon, or Christine Wescott give this book a read. I don't think you will be disappointed. I am only sorry that there seems to be only the second in the series. Still worth it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty Good Kiera Smith is a Super GEP. A genetically enhanced Person who is Genetically enhanced. Ok that didn't make much sense. A GEP is created by taking the best HUMAN genes and combining them. Kiera was made by taking the best GEP genes and combing them. Hmm much better. She was created at the behest of Alien affairs division of a galactic U.N. Of course they didn't commission a super-GEP. That was the work of a mad scientist who will probably play an important role in future books. Kiera is sent to a paradise planet to investigate a claim by a ruthless corporationg on a world that is inhabited, but the natives are dying off. Her job is to determine whether the native peoples of the planet really are dying off and if there is anything that can be done to save them. If there isn't the evil corporation will inherit the world after the natives die off. Of course given the corporation's track record keira is pretty sure that as soon as she determines that the natives are going extinct naturally they'll be made extinct, unnaturally. Interesting to point out that the natives to said paradise planet seem to be completely human in appearance. They apparently so human looking that they physically sexually compatible. Don't you just love the theory of parallel evolution? Or maybe it's proof positive of intelligent design. Oh well. Keira's a babe, the king alien is buff, and nature takes it's course. A little telepathy and other mental powers are thrown in plot and make it more interesting. I hope there is a next in the series.
