And if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him."--1 John V. 14, 15. The Lord Jesus said, "I know that Thou hearest me always;" and every believer may say the same thing, provided he be walking in the footsteps of Jesus, praying as He prayed, and as He has taught His disciples to pray. The prayer of faith, the prayer in Christ's name, the prayer in the Holy Ghost, the prayer which is not hindered by lust, but which springs from a sense of need, is sure to be answered sooner or later. If it be for blessings promised, in the very thing prayed for; and if it be for blessings not distinctly promised, either in the thing prayed for, or in something better. Such, as we have endeavoured to show, is the teaching of Scripture and of Christian experience. It will follow that there should be a constant search and inquiry after answers to our prayers, a ready re K r cognition of them when they come, and thanksgiving to God on that behalf. It is easier, however, for men to pray than to "watch unto prayer;" easier, especially, to pour out our complaints to God when trouble lies upon us, than to realise in faith that we are accepted and heard, and that, in some way or other, the return to our prayers is certain to come. It is to be feared that sometimes prayer is answered and the answer not perceived, because the suppliant has forgotten to look up and expect after he has prayed, or because he has in a measure ceased to desire the blessing before it arrives. In such circumstances, thanks will not be given to God for His goodness, and the want of gratitude will prevent the bestow...
