The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender.

Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it. It was the fate of Horza, the Changer, and his motley crew of unpredictable mercenaries, human and machine, actually to find it, and with it their own destruction.

Consider Phlebas - a space opera of stunning power and awesome imagination.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Banks is among the greatest writers to have worked in genre fiction in the twentieth century. This is his first work in that vein, and it is beautifully realized. Well worth your time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A strange universe It is common for people who read regularly to dismiss science fiction as a preserve of poor writers and derivative ideas. Unfortunately, this is usually accurate. However, Iain M. Banks is a conventional fiction author of some renown as well as one of the few excellent science fiction authors. This is arguably his best work. The universe surrounding Consider Phlebas is logical, comprehensible and does not reflect one man's view of utopia. Even more important to this book is that the environment does not control the story. This is a character driven tragedy. The main character is a shape shifter of sorts, there are intelligent machines, racist aliens, voracious cannibals among others. There are very few science fiction books that qualify as good fiction. This is one of them...
