Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Fascinating but Violent Conspiracy The first book in Ronie Kendig’s new series, “The Tox Files”, is not for the faint of heart. “Conspiracy of Silence” is a heart-thumping book packed with action, surprise, and extreme danger on nearly every page. Of course, when the back cover of the book states “This is the way the world ends”, excitement should be expected. Adding a unique twist, this novel integrates history, specifically Biblical history, as well. “Study the past to define the future” is a quote by Confucius, and as an epigraph before the prologue, it opens up “Conspiracy of Silence” with on-target precision. “Conspiracy of Silence” is a difficult book to pinpoint with a simple “like” or “dislike”. Ronie Kendig’s excellent writing and storytelling abilities bring the characters and plot to life - but as it turns out, at least for me, this was both a con and a pro... Although I am familiar with the Suspense Fiction genre, I have not read many novels specifically with military personnel as the main characters. Therefore, I was not prepared for the amount and intensity of the violence (combat, killing, etc.) that this book contained. On the other hand, the story more than lived up to it’s promise of fascination with the intricate historical mysteries and interwoven conspiracies that led the characters on an enthralling journey of discovery, both historical and present, both internal and external. In the end, I am glad to have read “Conspiracy of Silence” and will most likely pick up the next book in “The Tox Files”. While I did not enjoy the violence that abounded on more pages than not, I found the “conspiracy” part to be incredibly interesting. If you enjoy Suspense Fiction, especially military varieties, and don’t mind a hefty amount of violence mixed in with intricate webs of conspiracy, “Conspiracy of Silence” is definitely a book you should consider. “Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc.”

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fabulous start to the series "Conspiracy of Silence" is one heart-pounding ride, from start to finish! The scenes are action-packed and bring the characters to life with vivid imagery. If you ever found yourself in a perilous predicament, you would definitely want Cole "Tox" Russell on your side, because he's the very epitome of brave, dashing headlong into danger, determined to do whatever it takes to save those he cares about - and even those he doesn't! And, the mysterious and spiritually-wise Nigerian by his side makes for the perfect counterpart. Add in an amazing deception expert in the form of Kasey, and well, what's not to love about this well-written book? Indeed, I quite enjoyed the overall plot of Kendig's novel, how she takes a scene from the Bible and asks a great big "What If?" question about how past and present may collide to unleash a life-threatening plague. But the story ends up even bigger, pitting good versus ancient evil in a way I haven't encountered before. The plot is well-crafted, and the characters have been carefully fleshed out, with some appropriate romantic tension thrown in to boot. And in the midst of the running around the world, Kendig manages to deal with some deeper spiritual issues as well, and will even have you digging into your Bible to examine the scenes with Moses she touches upon. Any book that causes me to expand my Biblical knowledge is a keeper in my opinion! Fans of suspense novels with plenty of military action and mysterious characters and organizations are going to want to grab a copy of Kendig's latest novel. Fair warning, however: you may find yourself reading into the night, well-past your normal, appropriate bedtime, because it is very difficult to put this book down. And also remember this is only the first in the series. While Kendig does tie up some lose ends, you will definitely be longing for the next book in the series! I award this novel a strong rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Complex and action-packed Wow. Intense. Action-packed. Complex. This is a blockbuster thriller that could easily play out on the big screen. Has a Bourne Identity/Indiana Jones/ NCIS kind of vibe. Mind you, I always close my eyes in the fight scenes when I view a show but you can't do that when you're reading them so be prepared for some armchair cringing and wincing when those action-filled scenarios crop up...which is about every couple of pages. LOL Compelling reading but my whole body is sore in sympathy with Tox and his crew. This is the first book in a series -- The Tox Files -- and a free ebook novella (The Warrior's Seal) provides the backstory to Conspiracy of Silence, I didn't read the novella and had no trouble diving into this first book, but it's so complex, I think it might be a good idea to read the novella before cracking this one open. Rife with intrigue, political corruption and secrets too many to mention Tox is reluctantly pushed into the center of it all. The story is told mainly from his point of view and all the more raw and gritty because of it. Kendig writes a believable military scenario and the dynamics between the team -- the banter, support and wisecracks -- provide a bit of relief from the never-ending heart-in-throat action scenes. And I love the diversity of the team as well. Am eager to read their stories in future books. The intricacies of a plot centered around biblical history and archeology makes for a fascinating twist to the typical suspense plot. And, while that suspense definitely takes center-stage, there is a thread of romance running through this tale as well. And since Tox is involved, it's just as complicated as their mission. A mesmerizing read from start to finish. Eagerly waiting for book two. Crown of Souls which releases later this year. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Non-Stop Action For a person that people think is dead Tox is a very active from beginning to the end of this book, but there are those that were close to him that have trouble with all that happened before. The story begins at an archeology dig and the finding of what could be the end of society, and crossing the globe to retrieve and try to end what could happen. If you are a person who enjoys action, this book will keep you on the end of you seat, and linger for a long time, all the while making you think that this seems so very real. The author has done a wonderful job of bringing this story from Biblical times to the present, and I can just imagine how awesome it must have been at that dig, at least in the beginning. We all know that Evil lurks, and you will feel like you at an Indiana Jones movie, with that big stone coming at you. I received this book through the Publisher Bethany House and their Blogger Program, and was not required to give a positive review.
