What is Satan’s greatest attack on the Christian church? Is it atheistic college professors? Is it Hollywood style movies and television? No! It is counterfeit Christianity, a phony version that looks and acts so much like the real thing that Jesus warned us of it in these last days before His return (Matthew 24:10-11). Paul also spoke of it. He said, “I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard!...” (Acts 20:29-31 NIV). Jesus told us that the “savage wolves” are false prophets that come in “sheep’s clothing” (Matthew 7:15). That means that they portray themselves as God’s sheep. Their attitude is, “I’m one of you. I love Jesus Christ. I believe in the Bible. Now let me teach you God’s secret strategies for getting God to do your will.”

Right there you will find a red flag of deception! We must serve God, not the other way around! Counterfeit Christianity is appealing to people who want to flatter their egos. Doctrines like the “King’s Kid” are encouraged. The attitude is “I’m a King’s Kid because I’m a Christian. That makes me better than those low life sinners around me.” However Jesus taught us humility, not egotism. Counterfeit Christianity tells people that God wants them rich in this world. But Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth... But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21 NIV. Also, see John 18:36).

True Christianity has been refined by fire (1 Peter 1:7, Revelation 3:18) through suffering. Counterfeit Christianity is the Laodicean church that Christ has rejected (Revelation 3:16)! Nothing is too good for them. They like their “Christian” theme parks, and “Christian” rock music, and “Christian” passion plays. All is accepted by them as long as it is moral, done through a church, and attaches a “Christian” label to it! Paul wrote, “...the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine... They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths” (2 Timothy 4:3-4 NIV). That time has already come! The counterfeit church began in Paul’s day (Galatians 1:6-7). Jude also warned us about it (Jude 1:3-4), as did Peter (2 Peter 2:17-22). Paul was very worried about it destroying the church (2 Corinthians 11:3-4). In deception they come calling Jesus Christ Lord. But they will not yield to His Holy Spirit (Acts 7:49-51. Also, see Luke 6:46). So they will not make it to Heaven (Matthew 7:21).

This book describes five specific doctrines of the counterfeit church and teaches the reader how to discern the difference between truth and the lies. Chapter 1 is “The Fun Gospel.” It appeals to those who want a religious social club with games and entertainment but have never made a total commitment for Christ. Chapter 2 is “The Doctrine of Unconditional Eternal Security”, one of Satan’s favorite doctrines because it implies that no matter how sinful a person becomes after turning to Christ, they can never lose their salvation. Chapter 3 is “The Prosperity Gospel” and appeals to those who want to profit financially from Christ’s suffering.

Chapter 4 is “A False Christ And A Counterfeit Gospel” which accepts anyone as a Christian as long as they claim to love Jesus. Their lifestyle is still worldly and they seek glory for themselves. But, unlike the Apostle Paul (Philippians 3:7-9), they feel that they can take all their past prestige in sports, entertainment, medicine, education, etc. and tack a Christian label on it. They feel that by doing so they are serving God. Chapter 5 is “Is Anger A Sin?” It describes Satan’s way of disarming the church through fear of being “unchristian” if they become angry and defend themselves from attack, or contend for the faith.
