This book was an amazing second installment in the Throne of Glass series. It showed us more about who "Celaena" really is, and how incredible she is. This book was definitely one of the saddest books in the series(next to Empire of Storms of course).

Refreshing
I really like this series but sometimes I found it a little difficult to follow. The plot is really good and the characters are well developed. It has and unpredictable story line which is why I love it so much, I'm finding a lot of books these days are becoming cliched and predictable but this was really refreshing.
The one thing to look out for if you're a younger or more sensitive reader is the romance scenes in this book because there are a lot. If you're not comfortable reading these sorts of romance scenes then you might want to skip some of the chapters or not read the book.
Overall I love the writing in this book and it's one of my favorite series.

It's getting better...
I may be a tad bit generous with this rating, but I loved the ending which is what shot it up to a 4* for me.
I found this book a little hard to read, In the sense that I found it very easy to put down and I had to find motivation within myself to read it. I found myself going to other books to read because I was bored of reading Crown of Midnight. I found it a little boring, but plot seemed a little slow and I was enjoying it about as much as the first book, which was not enjoying it much at all.
My problem with the last book was the writing. And I can already tell within the first 50 pages that this book the writing was much better. However I still found it difficult to read. The ending was spectacular and it was the last 100 to 150 pages when I finally got that feeling that I can’t put this book down and I stayed up to finish it.
This is definitely not a book that helps you get out of a reading slump. If anything it puts you in a reading slump. This is definitely a series that you have to be focused and motivated to read. I’m still optimistic that the later books are just going to be phenomenal.

Amazing
Sarah J Maas has quickly become a favorite author of mine. I read ACOTAR written by her first and instantly fell in love with the characters and the story line and then was recommended to read this (which obviously I did because I love Maas) and I just cannot decide which series I like more! The character development over the course of the series is amazing to watch, Maas really knows how to keep a reader on their toes. I cannot wait for the next installment of the series! Definitely worth the read.

Startling Revelations
Ever have one of those, "Um - WHAT?" moments whilst reading a really good book? I'd need more than two hands to count how many times I've found myself mouthing those words to myself while reading this bloody book. I want to shove it in my friends' faces, demand that they read it, praise it to the high heavens - and then turn around and grab Maas by the shoulders and shake her, because how dare she put me through so much mental and emotional torture. Ugh, where's the next book? I need it, like, now.

Love
I expect this series to never end. With each book there's a new twist or turn that you wouldn't guess coming. I love the advancements the characters have made and the story that's panning out is s intriguing. I've already developed such a strong bond to each of the characters and it fascinates me how Maas can keep track of each of them, giving them their own strong personalities. Maas is really good at leaving bread crumbs and hidden clues through out the series for you to either read into and figure out, or just wait until she comes back to it later on. I loved figuring out those clues and having her prove me right. It's kind of like putting a puzzle together. Can't wait to keep reading the rest of her series...they're so promising!

This one made me love SJM. It was the perfect pacing, great characters and awesome world building. However I will say I really couldn't care less when one of the characters died. I actually felt nothing, I think it's because they weren't given enough spotlight for me to really grab onto. Overall though, this book is a perfect example of the type of author SJM can be and gave me hope for her, even if later books disappointed me.

Captivating and Thrilling!
This second book of the series was even more incredible than the first. There's more action, more adventure, and more delectable darkness. The characters get fleshed out perfectly, and their development is amazing. The author really gets to dive into their back stories and develop a deeper understanding of why they do what they do. The mystery from the first book was only the tiniest tip of the iceberg. I was so intrigued the entire way through. I read this book in one sitting. Highly recommend.

Better Than the First!
Oooh, that ending! While I honestly can't believe that Maas killed off one of my favourite characters in only the second book (I mean rude!), I found myself not caring as much about Celaena's Wyrdmarks/keys/worlds-quest-thing. I have a feeling that plot lines gonna keep coming back though so I'll have to get with the program I guess. On the other hand, the revelation about Celaena's past/origins? Now that's what I'm excited to see more of! (Also at this point I keep flip-flopping between loving Dorian more and loving Chaol more. For once I'm just gonna take it easy and see how it plays out.)
Excited to read the next instalment!

Absolutely fantastic continuation of the series. The characters just seemed to keep growing on me with every page that I read. There were defiantly some moments that left me shocked about what happened, but that made reading the book an even greater experience.

Disliked the first half, really enjoyed the second half.
I'm going to try to keep this as spoiler free as possible but it's the second book and some of the things I disliked are quite specific... so, read this review at your own risk. I was going to rate this book two stars... but the second half sucked me in and convinced me that I did, in fact, like this book. That being said, there were quite a few things I hated or disliked...
First, CAN THE ROMANCE IN THIS BOOK PLEASE JUMP OFF A CLIFF? (That phrasing brought to you by my teenage self, who also would have hated this nonsense.) I'm assuming the whole love triangle thing continues in some form for the rest of the series and it's honestly got me debating whether or not I want to continue reading these books because it's the reason I didn't like the first half of this book. Celaena's relationship with Chaol makes sense to me and I thought there was a lot of chemistry between them in this book, as opposed to the last when I felt there wasn't anything significant between them. I still don't get her thing with Dorian; he seemed like a completely different character in this book and any suggestion of romance between them just feels unnatural and forced. And before I move past the subject of romance, (SPOILER ALERT for the rest of this paragraph?) let's discuss the line that was so bad it made me cringe: "I'm pretty certain 'tired, but happy' is abnormal reaction after one's first time." I mean, really? I rolled my eyes so hard I nearly gave myself a headache. And I know this is YA, but that's no excuse for that moment of terrible writing.
I still feel like Celaena's behaviour is a bit out of character in general. A lot of her actions and reactions don't jive with a highly skilled, mercilessly trained, feared-above-all-others assassin who survived a year in a hard labour camp on top of everything else she went through in her life. When the book started to move away from romance and back to the general plot of the series, I did feel like Celaena was more "herself" and the second half of the story definitely felt more authentic.
The writing in the first half was definitely subpar compared to the second half. The first half was slow, there were a lot of corny lines, a lot of dialogue that felt forced... not sure what's up with that, but the second half of the book felt completely different. Hopefully the third book continues in the same vein because I would like to keep reading this series.
There was one major plot point I questioned in the second half... Celaena completely misses something that was instantly obvious to me which really irked me. I didn't find it believable at all so that element was quite annoying.
I did really enjoy the magic system by the end of this book. I was unimpressed when I finished Throne of Glass because it felt underdeveloped, vague, and unconvincing; but, this book definitely changed my mind.
I LOVED the whole twist at the end. Or, twists, I guess. So, despite my issues with the first half of this book, I am excited to continue with the adventures of the bookish assassin.

Good, I guess
SO, this one was an improvement on the first in a myriad of ways. The cheesiness and overblown fantasy aspect was still very much present, but it grew up in a lot of ways. The love triangle was nearly a non-issue, the romance took a back seat to what needed to get done (in a heartbreaking way, but still) and Celaena proved herself nearly worthy of all the posturing and epic promises of the first book. There were some truly epic moments, and moments where my heart legitimately twinged, and moments where I was horrified and disgusted. It was great.
Also, I love how Celaena, for all of her kick-buttness and darkness and legendary fighting skills, is allowed to be girly and love chocolate cake and pretty dresses and novels. Her fighting skills are never sexualized or undermined because she is a girl, and being awesome at her job and being a girl are not seen as mutually exclusive. It's great, and even if she loses her lightheartedness in the books to come (which might happen, because they are getting steadily darker and more serious,) at least we will have known it was there. Plus, she's managed to keep her ability to appreciate cake even after everything she's been through, so I have hope for her.
Overall, I am growing steadily more invested in the series, and now I need to go read the next one, stat. Even if I know it will break my heart.

Great but a little slow.
This book was good, I couldn't put it down and finished it in 2 sittings. I loved it, yet I did find it a bit slow. Like with every SJM book, I get annoyed with spelling/grammar errors and the constant use of the same words, over and over. I would recommend it though as it paves the way for the next books which are even better!!

The perfect sequel!
After reading and really enjoying 'Throne of Glass', I was worried that I wouldn't enjoy the sequel quite as much. I am happy to say that I was very wrong.
I loved 'Crown of Midnight', it had everything that you could want in a novel. Mystery? Yes. Fantasy? Yes. Magic? Yes. Romance? Yes. Lovable characters? Yes! The list could go on! The story caught my attention from the start and I found myself attempting to race through this book.
The romance. Oh, the romance. That is one of the many things that was certainly done well. I love the relationship between Celaena and her love interest (I'm not going to say who). I have read many books lately that have fallen into the love-triangle, where there is no obvious choice, there is no true connection. In this series (and this novel in particular) I feel that there is an obvious romantic love between two of the characters and a different sort of love between another. It's love as well but not in the same sense. I could be totally off with this but that is how it reads to me.
I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I honestly can't imagine the excitement or adventure in store because I felt like this book was constant adventure. Can't wait to read more!

Absolutely Amazing Sequel!
How does Sarah J. Maas do it? She creates a world so captivating and entrancing that you can't find help but find yourself in awe of her creations. Having read Throne of Glass not too long ago - which I was pretty impressed by (you can read my review here) - I had high hopes for this novel and series. And let me tell you Mrs. Maas didn't let me down.
When I thought Celaena...er, Aelin was already a badass, BOOM! Badassery explodes from every end. From the amazing writing, driven plot, extruchiatingly awesome characters, to the perfection that was the execution, Sarah J. Maas has created another masterpiece that now sits on my shelf. Everything was just utter perfection. Seriously, there was nothing that I didn't like.
I tried not to pay attention to all the hype and generally avoided reading anything on Twitter or Instagram in fear of getting spoiled. I know I'm late to the party...sigh. Pushing aside the fact that I have now only began to read this series in 2016 when this particular novel was originally published in 2013 (*shakes head slowly), I am happy to state that I am officially hooked. I'm jumping onboard the bandwagon and am going to see this series to the end.

Sisters are Always Right
Throne of Glass didn't wow me, and I was going to pass on this series. My SISTER threatened our very sister-ship upon my continuing this series, and here we are.
As the series/ plot progresses, I find Sarah J. Maas' writing getting stronger, more vivid, and more tantalizing! I literally planned on getting home from work, eating, and then finishing this book tonight.
I am marking this series as "mature" not in a "new-adult" kind of way, but in a "this is a crazy-violent, blood, guts, stabby, stabby, stabby YA book" kind of way.
Will write more on the ol' blog, but suffice it to say, this is a great read.

I could not put this book down. Definitely superior to throne of glass, this action packed sequel brings in some serious twists and turns for Celaena! I love Dorian and Choal, and I will say that my ship for Celaena took off then sank in this book, taking me for an emotional rollercoaster. Spectacular!
THRONE OF GLASS was excellent. Really, truly, deeply excellent. CROWN OF MIDNIGHT? SPECTACULAR. Wow–– mind is blown! Literally stunned speechless by this amazing sequel. The story is tense and exciting, the character development substantial, the action electrifying, and the secrets and twists jaw-dropping! The first half of the book was engaging and interesting, but compared to the second half, it was pretty slow. The second half, after a MAJOR twist that I couldn't have expected less, took off at rocket speed! I literally had no idea where it was going to go, and it stunned me with all its action and intrigue. Celaena continued to be a stellar character, and what I love about her is how she reacts to her past. It made the ending, the very final page, pack one hell of a punch. Chaol and Dorian are great, and I'm a sucker for Chaol. I won't say much, but that guy definitely has a journey ahead of him. I can't wait to see what happens with Dorian and his involvement in all this, since his storyline is taking a fantastic turn as well. The action scenes were great and creative, and every story element lined up so that the plot wrapped up, but there was still room for more in the next book. I can't go into more detail without giving anything away, but wow, this series is just knocking me out with its incredibleness. Seriously, get started on it if you haven't! There's a reason it's had so many incredibly high scores on review sites. I can't wait to take part of Celaena's next adventure!

While I was much less a fan of the love interest in this book, the entire storyline here was incredibly exciting because we've moved out of the original competition and now we get to see Celaena's life as the King's Champion.
