Reactionary enemy regimes have brutally taken command in South Africa and Germany. U.S. and European shipping lanes are suddenly under attack. World War is at hand -- and for the ruthless Berlin–Boer Axis, the devastating weapons of choice will be tactical nukes used at sea.

The Voortrekker, a deep-diving state-of-the-art German submarine, is on the prowl, carrying more onboard firepower than many of the world's nations possess -- and the crippled sub USS Challenger is the only weapon in America's arsenal that can match up with the silent killer. But the nation's last hope is in dry dock -- and Captain Jeffrey Fuller, Challenger's brilliant, driven skipper, must get his damaged boat back in action weeks before it is battle-ready. Fuller has faced Voortrekker in the past and, unlike so many others, he survived. This time, however, the fight will take place in waters far too deep for a normal sub to withstand. And this time the prize will be America.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another nail biter The bad thing about Joe's books is that you can't just put them down and come back to them. This was a tremendous read and I am arming myself for the next Jeffrey Fuller adventure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was hooked! Although this was not the first in the series of books about a future war featuring submarine Captain, Jeffrey Fuller, this was the first of Joe Buff's books that I read. I was hooked. I even missed my subway stop because there were "torpedoes in the water". Although a technothriller, he does a good job of explaining terms for us shorebound folks, and also includes a helpful glossary because the navy loves its acronyms. At times, it seems formulaic because each Captain figures out the strategy of their enemy, or plans something that the other guy also thinks of. You also see that the enemy Captain's main character flaw will eventually be his downfall, aided also by his XO, who is not as heartless as he is. However, the climax is a total surprise as you see Jeffrey Fuller grow into his role as Commander of a stealthy, ceramic-hulled submarine, involved in a tactical nuclear battle, set in the year 2011.
