Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful I read the remnant chronicles a while back and while I really enjoyed that series, this book blew me away. The characters, the writing style, the atmosphere, everything was so good. I especially liked the "mob style" (kind of) family aspect. All in all, definitely recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Read! I did not read The Remnant Chronicles, but I will now (if I ever find some time) after reading this. As someone who never read or heard of the first series, I didn't feel lost. This book stands amazingly on its own. I really enjoyed the story. I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I enjoyed it! I haven't read the Remnat Chronicles but I read this book anyway. Let me tell you that it did not disappoint. While it became a little predictable at times, I enjoyed the love story greatly (I'm a sucker for a good old forbidden romance).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read! It took me about 60 pages to become fully engrossed in the story, but the point where our two main characters meet, it instantly took off for me! The adventure in the book was great and I was so interested to learn more about the Remnant world! I also like the twist we had on the characters, the female lead being a solider while the man lead was a thief!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sadly Disappointed Without question, this novel was one of my most anticipated reads of this year. I loved the original "Remnant Chronicles" trilogy and was so excited to hear the announcement that the series would be continuing (albeit with different main characters). I wanted more from this world and I wanted more of Mary E. Pearson's writing. I don't think I could be more disappointed to say that I didn't really enjoy this novel and am giving it 2.5 stars. I don't think I went into this novel with overly high expectations or was comparing it to my enjoyment to the original trilogy either. It was just not the story for me. First, let me talk about the length of this book. I enjoy and devour big books quite regularly ('I like big books and I cannot lie'). I appreciate big books and the ability to be able to fully immerse yourself in the world, the characters, and the details. However, when a book is unnecessarily long, that is when I have a problem. In my opinion, this book was way too long. Way longer than it needed to be. I found myself losing interest in the story quite regularly because I was just getting...bored. I hate to use that word but it's true. There would be moments that would hook me but then the story would lapse into chapters of filler that didn't need to be there and it took away from the story as a whole. As I read an ARC and have seen that there are less pages in the final copy, I can only hope that some of the unnecessary filler was eliminated. Unfortunately, there were many things that I just did not like about this novel. It was slower paced (to the point of a turtle crawl), I didn't really like the storyline, and I didn't particularly like either of the main characters or their relationship. As I typically mention, I don't need to have 'likeable' characters to enjoy a novel, but for this one the reader was obviously meant to favour these two. The two main points that I did enjoy about this novel was the cameo of certain characters from the original trilogy (I'm not going to say who or the placement in the novel) as it was subtle and done well. This novel doesn't require the original trilogy to be read beforehand but with that cameo, there was a nod to those books and some of the original characters. As well, again I have to be vague to avoid any sort of spoilers, but.....that ending. It was the strongest part of the whole book! I think the ending gives the second novel in this series potential. Many things could happen from this point forward in the story and I am intrigued to see where it goes. I'm desperately hopeful that the next novel turns it around for me and I enjoy this series so much more. ***Thank you to Raincoast Books for sending me an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review***

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't Put It Down I feel like I’ve been waiting FOREVER to jump back into the Remnants world and find out what’s been happening since the original series ended. And wow, does Pearson bring us on a new epic adventure (just check out the size of the book!). I love that Pearson wrote this book from different perspectives; I’m finding that more and more I prefer when we get multiple perspectives as narrators in novels because it gives us a more organic and whole view of what’s happening. In this case, both Kazi and Jase are actually so full of lies, usually lying to each other which in turn makes them sometimes lie to themselves, so we as readers are never really sure of what’s true and what’s not, which is rather brilliant. I really liked that we got the chance to know both characters, especially because Jase has such a huge family and their family history is so epic, that simply learning it from Kazi's perspective wouldn’t have been enough. We are definitely given more of the Remnant world because were given both of their perspectives, Venden and Ballenger. When this novel was announced, I actually thought it was going to be from Natiya or Eben’s perspective, so I was interested to see how Kazi and Jase’s story lines would be interwoven with the Venda we had left behind at the end of the original trilogy. I do think we had to wait a very long time before we met up with Lia again, but I understand why Pearson took so long to bring us there. Overall, I was incredibly happy with this book. I actually couldn’t believe how big it was and when I finally received it, but it’s never a complaint of mine because I love the way Pearson tells her story and introduces these new characters in this changed world of the Remnant Chronicles. I am honestly completely thrown by the cliffhanger if she gives us at the end and I’m a little bit terrified of what’s going to happen in the next book!
