Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Romance and Intrigue The author weaves the subjects of danger, grief, work-life balance, romantic and God's love into a believable story. I loved that she also addressed an evil many are unaware of present even in the US.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great procedural crime novel! "She's dedicated her life to ending violence. But has she moved too deep into a treacherous world? When two Jane Does are killed on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, detective and behavioral specialist Avery North discovers they share something in common--a magnolia tattoo on their shoulders. Suspecting a serial killer, Avery joins forces with medical examiner Jackson Bryant to solve the crimes and prevent another murder. As they venture deep into a sinister criminal world, Avery and Jackson are taken to the very edge of their abilities--and their hearts." (Publisher's description) From the opening chapter, this book had me hooked. With many twists and turns, this book kept me up late at night reading just one more chapter, again and again. I thoroughly enjoyed Avery North and the tenacity she has for the case. She pours her all into the Magnolia case and it comes with dangerous consequences. Her budding relationship with Jackson is just what she needs but with the baggage she carries, she's unsure of whether to continue it or not. I highly recommend this book for those who love procedural crime dramas. I look forward to her next book. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Suspense I was definitely hooked from the start! It was like sitting down and reading through a really good prime-time police show. Harris kept the pacing at a furious clip that had my mind buzzing with all kinds of possibilities. Lots of armchair sleuthing opportunities in this read! Gritty realism meshes with spiritual truths and a battle between good and evil ensues and Avery and Jackson are caught in the middle of it. Their blossoming romance might be threatened by the case they are working on but thankfully love conquers all in this incredible romantic suspense. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Deeply absorbing Be warned, this book is hard to put down! I found it difficult to stop reading this book and go to bed at a decent time so don’t start to read it thinking it will help you wind down after a long day. The heroine of the book, Avery North, is a single mom who is a homicide detective with the Atlanta Police Department. She is investigating the murders of two young girls who both have magnolia tattoos on their shoulders. She suspects a serial killer is at work and works with medical examiner Jackson Bryant, whom she is beginning to fall in love with. As she gets deeper into the complex case, she begins to realize the case involves more than murder. The story is well-written and certainly pulls you in. You feel the urgency that Avery feels as she tries to solve the case. I enjoyed following Avery as she tries to juggle solving a case that is personal for her, being a single mom, and trying to sort out her feelings about Jackson. I think the author could have shown Avery relying on God for strength to get through the day a little more. This book would be appropriate for a book club as it includes discussion questions in the back. It is the first book in a series entitled Southern Crimes. The second book will be released in the summer of 2014 and will be called Fatal Exchange. I look forward to reading it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dangerous Passage Solid storyline, engaging characters and well written. I was interested in the lives of Avery and Jackson from the beginning. The supporting characters of family I enjoyed very much. The conclusion brings to light some disturbing realities of the world we live in and has me thinking, and that’s a good thing. Looking forward to Book Two. "Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Intriguing plot elements There are many things to like in the latest book from Lisa Harris, including intriguing plot elements, smart detectives, some suspenseful scenes, and a blossoming romance. The characters have complex pasts, and both Avery and Jackson are recovering from major losses in their lives, something many readers will likely relate to. However, while the overall plot had all the right elements, I found that a lot of the book dragged for me. The book was much too easy to put down for a suspense book, and often the action-packed scenes were followed by moments that didn't seem to move the story forward. To be honest, Avery just wasn't my favourite character, and I found her swinging back and forth between questioning her abilities to suddenly having renewed determination to succeed. While this does lend her an element of humanness, it is something that happened a few too many times for my liking. I did enjoy the final few chapters, which moved along at a better pace and which will leave the reader wanting to find out what will happen next in the series. Overall, however, I give this book only a mild recommendation and a rating of 3 out of 5 stars. Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc.
