From the moment Lucas first saw Rheena, he knew she was the one...his destined mate. But all he can do is watch her, waiting until she realizes that she is just like him—that she has the power to turn into a wolf.

Lucas is the leader of the Dark Guardians, a pack of werewolves that meet deep in the heart of a state park whose existence is threatened by a sinister bio-tech company. Rheena is a normal seventeen-year-old who loves camping and the outdoors; but she’s adopted and has no idea that she’s inherited the gene that will turn her into a wolf.

Rheena can’t understand why she’s so drawn to distant, aloof Lucas—until it’s almost too late to save him.

Rachel Hawthorne believes in happy endings and adopting older rescue dogs. She also writes asNew York Timesbestselling author Lorraine Heath and as J. A. London with her son, Alex. She lives near Dallas, Texas, with her husband and is presently spoiling a pooch named Jake.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from quick read An interesting story, that begins with this first book in the Dark Guardians series. I was always a vampire fun but these books made me see werewolves with another eye. Of course I will always have a soft spot for vampires but this book was plain wonderful in a kind of cheesy and fairytale kind of way. It's basically a romance series with a little action going on. It's all about love, destiny and forever. Werewolves mark their mates with a tattoo on their shoulders and if a guy doesn’t end up with the girl they are destine for, they end up alone forever. There is a special connection between male and female that only exists between werewolves making their love true and last forever. It sounds cheesy and it felt like it, since the author introduces us to this world through Kayla's eyes really fast. She works at the park, where her real parents died, for the summer in order to get the traumatic experience she had when she was little, over. There she meets the others and among them Lucas that scares her and attracts her at the same time. On the verge of a crazy scientist who wants to capture them, she discovers that werewolves are real and she is one of them. And if she doesn't pick Lucas as her mate till the first full moon after her 17th birthday-to help her through her transformation-she might even die. Loved the book! I will definitely read the rest of them. There are 4 books in total so far. It a perfect book for those that are hungry for some cheesy love-for-ever story.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Short But Pleaseing Read At 320 pages Moonlight, the first book in the Dark Guardian series, is a quick read but it's packed with romance, suspense, and a new take on shape shifters. This series is definitely geared for young adults and although the majority of books I am currently reading are from the young adult genre I found this book to be a little young for me. As a protagonist I feel Kayla authentically represents your average teenage girl dealing with complex and unexpected obstacles. Although at times Kayla is portrayed as insecure and vulnerable her personality is balanced with courage and loyalty. I think Lucas caters to that unexplainable attraction young women have to "bad boys" and it feeds the fantasy that maybe that bad boy just needed the right girl to come along. I really enjoyed that the majority of the book takes place in the wilderness. I am an avid camper so the thought that while hiking through the woods there could be a human in wolf form following me sends shivers down my spine! I really love the history of shape shifters that Hawthorne delves into periodically throughout the progression of Moonlight. Additionally she reveals just enough about the supporting characters to excite the reader for the additional Dark Guardian novels. As a reader I love when an author explores other characters within the series and I look forward to reading Dark Guardian three, Full Moon.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Nice, Light Read This was (in my opinion) nothing special. The story itself was pretty cool, but I wasn't so into the characters or the style of writing. Worth a read, but nothing nearly as amazing as Shiver or the Wereling trilogy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Emotionally Thrilling! I've been SO obsessed with werewolves ever since I read the Twilight Saga, Moonlight and it's followers absolutley entralled me! I didn't do anything for an entire weekend and was absolutley crushed when I was finsihed the three books that are out, so far. I can't wait for the fourth! Kayla and Lucas will hold you captive like Bio Chrome demonstrates!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lovestory I really liked this book but from the cover I was expecting a little bit more action, there was ome but more will have been nice. This novel is definitely more of a lovestory with paranormal then a paranormal novel with romance. Though there is werewolves involved in the book, I think the emotion and questioning of Kayla were realistc and very well written. Overall I really appreciated the first book of The Dark Guardian and serie and I'll read the whole serie.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Moonlight I read this little novel in one day and I have to say I enjoyed it and will read the rest of the trilogy but it isn't a favorite. The beginning sucked me in and the middle was very interesting but the ending disappointed me. I found the writing wasn't the best and Kayla's parents' death was mentioned way to many times. The ending disappointed me because I found it was very corny! The plot and concept of the novel is very intriguing but I thought it could have been played out better. Don't get me wrong, I liked the book, it had action, romance and mystery but it could have been so much better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Forever An Amazing Book! In the first book for the Dark Guardian series Moonlight, it's based on Kayla's perspective. Kayla is a nature lover who won't even hurt a fly. As she turns seventeen she discover a hidden secret that she has never expected to find. She is a Shifter, or werewolf. As she gets to know Lucas, who is the leader of the Shifters she realzies that he was the one she is destined with. Her Forever. As Lucas and Kayla share their feelings together, they find out that there are scientists who want to expose the secret of the Dark Guardians. Kayla is willing to choose being a Dark Guardian forever, and forget about the life she knew. I absolutely loved this book! I thought it was very, very cute and I love how Lucas and Kayla fit together perfectly. And I just can't wait for the second one! This series is a Definite Read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Paranormal Romance that for some reason sucked me right in I don't even know if i know how to describe why i enjoyed this book so much. It's book one of the Dark Guardian Trilogy, and this particular novel focuses on Kayla's conflicting feelings for a werewolf named Lucas. Essentially Kayla's parents were murdered in a forest when she was little girl, and she ended up getting adopted and grew up a seemingly normal girl. However, she was haunted by her past. At 16 she returned to the forest, and instantly made friends with a girl named Lindsay and met some other teens - including the super hot Lucas. She returns the following summer as a Sherpa (forest guide) trying to face her fears but have her friends around from the previous summer who are Sherpas too. Her first assignment is a trek deep into the woods with a prof, his son, and grad students, along with the group of Sherpas, including Lucas and Lindsay to name a couple. And this is were the real fun begins... This novel is a PARANORMAL ROMANCE. You spend most of your time reading about Kayla, and her feelings or even infatuation towards Lucas. She constantly comments on his "hotness" and feels a pull towards him that she initially doesn't feel is reciprocated on Lucas' part. Lucas is the brooding werewolf (she doesn't know this initially), who is always protecting and looking out for Kayla, but also shows a serious demeanor that Kayla most often feels intimidated by where she feels like he's too intense for her baggage. It's a real yo-yo game for a good portion of the book. She even tries to convince herself she likes Mason, the prof's son, but this is because he would be a safe choice. What she doesn't realize in this novel is that because her birth parents' murder, she never grew up knowing she is to become a werewolf on the first full moon after her 17th birthday - which she turned the day they left on the expedition. More conflicting internal struggles occur for Kayla, but it always reverts back to Lucas, who not only helps her realize her fate, but wants to be her 'mate' for life. This is as much as i am going to tell you, and the reason i said so much, is because the back of the book is quite revealing all by itself. Thus i do not feel like i'm playing spoil sport - i am hoping to peak your interest though ;) What i won't mention are the added conflicts to the story. Nothing ever goes smoothly. You need some action. And in the book you discover two threats that could put a dent into the Pack's, Lucas', and Kayla's plan. It adds a little more flavor to the story beyond Kayla's infatuation with Lucas and vice versa. All that being said, this was a FAST and easy read, and i could have read a lot more. It was almost to quick for me at 263 pages. I am definitely going to read the other two books, as Hawthorne did a great job sucking me right into the story. I can't give a concrete reason why i loved this book, i guess i'm just a sucker for love stories where it's not all roses all the time. This is definitely a book for girls/women who enjoy Twilight and who enjoy good love stories that are not necessarily unique or original in theme. The action adds a necessary dimension to the book that makes it that much better. I STILL REALLY LIKED IT! Enjoy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Adorable! I thought this book was so cute! Personally I love romance in my books and this one was fantastic! Lucas' brooding and protectiveness enhaced the deprth of feeling while Kayla's mistrust added to the uneasiness of their possible relationship. Overall a great book! I can't wait for the next one in the series to come out and for us to discover more about Rafe and Lyndsay!
