Rated 4 out of 5 by from Romance blooms in unexpected places Ever since reading ‘The Club’, I had been looking forward to reading more of AL Brooks’ work and this did not disappoint. There is hot sex is this one as well but so much more – comedy and drama along with romance in perfect proportion. Each character has a struggle of one kind or another to face and deal with in the course of the book, a transition to make on top of other things going on in their lives. Myriad emotions are at play in their circumstances so the characters’ relationships to blood relations and chosen family can be highlighted and depicted in a way that’s relatable and believable. I found this story a bit of a deviation from many lesfic stories I’ve read, refreshingly so, where characters are settled into careers and at the top of their game, with loving supportive families surrounding them etc; here in ‘Dark Horse’ some characters are more in progress in their lives than idealized, whether it’s career uncertainty or dealing with homophobia and acceptance long after someone has come out to them. These ‘flaws’, if they can be called that, made them more realistic to me and having them present in the characters on top of everything else going on – loss, grief, facing the past and its demons, being open to change etc – enriched the story and made it more enjoyable to read. Anyone who has experienced loss or illness of a loved one (whether estranged or otherwise in their lives) may find the clash of emotions familiar, or the various responses and reactions to coming out to your near and dear. The romance is great and progresses as expected given the circumstances Holly and Sadie are in when they meet. The other relationships in the book are wonderful too. Sadie’s best friend Nicole deserves special mention for being that ideal friend who knows just what to say and exactly how to say it to get the message across; she’s a gem along with Sadie’s grandmother Elsie. The scenes the three of them share are funny and heartwarming. All in all it’s a fantastic book, well balanced so neither the comedy nor the drama outweighs the other. I highly recommend it along with AL Brooks’s other book ‘The Club’ for satisfying reading and great storytelling. I hope there are more books yet to come from this fabulous author.
