Night lasts a thousand hours. Forty sleeps—an endless desert of time when no one cares what happens to you until day.

Helene has given up. Only concern for her sister's grave medical condition tethers her to the world she dreams of escaping through death. If only she could bring herself to end it.

Caught out at night getting medicine for her sister, Helene is captured and taken as a slave for Gabriel, the mysterious ruler of the city.

“Helene, I will take your struggle away. I will bring you back to life.”

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unique!! I tried this book on a whim and was NOT disappointed. It’s an interesting read for sure! I would call it a dystopian society in a paranormal context. Vampires basically rule the world but are unknown to humans. They go through 1000 hours of day and 1000 hours of night. In day, people live their lives and are happy. At night, they lock themselves inside because at night is when all the bad people come out. Helene is out just before night hits getting meds for her sister. On her way home she’s taken captive and brought to a mysterious person’s house. He has his guard beat her, wanting her to break down. But she doesn’t and with all the stuff in life, she welcomes the possibility of death, so he stops the beatings and keeps her for himself. She learns he’s a vampire king and the type of place he runs for his people. He compels humans to work for him during the night as sex and food banks. But Helene is taken just for him. There’s a fair amount of sex and erotica, but much of it is on the classy side of erotica and not the gross side. Given it’s a vampire story..you never know. It’s a weird world we’re brought into but I quite enjoyed it. What I didn’t enjoy was Helene, in all honesty. I found her annoying. Gabriel I did enjoy though and I’m sure that seems backwards. I found him pretty compelling overall. It’s a unique read and a unique world the author created and I would be interested in trying more out by her.
