A new day dawns blood red

A master of fire, Mira is the last hope for the world. For centuries she has secretly enforced the history-altering edicts of the Triad. Now she and her unlikely ally—the human vampire hunter, Danaus—have come to Venice, home of the nightwalker rulers. But there is no safety in the ancient city, for the threat of conflict is in the wind . . . with unholy alliances and earth-shattering betrayals taking hideous form in the shadows.

Banished for eons beyond the world's boundaries, the malevolent naturi prepare to feed once again upon a vulnerable earth—and treachery is opening wide the portal that will enable their dread re-emergence. The great battle that has always been Mira's destiny is looming, and she must remain powerful in the face of a shocking revelation: that Danaus, the only creature she dares to trust, is something more than the man he claims to be . . .

Jocelynn Drake is theNew York Timesbestselling author of the Dark Days series and lives in Florida. When not at her desk, she is most likely to be found playing video games, watching movies, or hanging with her family.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The action and travels continue Jocelynn Drake keeps up the great writing in the sequel to Nightwalker. Traveling from London to Venice to Crete on Mira's private jet, the vampire enforcer is in constant company of Danaus, the vampire hunter who may be much more then he appears, Tristan, the quiet, new vampire, and her collection of makers who want to alternately help her and kill her. Mira is also in constant battles with the naturi, a nasty breed of creatures bent on destroying the world. Drake has a gift for writing fight scenes that leave the reader breathless. I am counting down the days until I can get my hands on Dawnbreaker, the next book in this series. Mira and Danaus' relationship will be taking an interesting turn, I believe, andwill we finally discover if they truly want to kill each other "as nature intended"?

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good addition I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, it had almost every aspect that I enjoy. There was action pouring out of almost every single page, enough mystery to leave you guessing even as the book ends. I am absolutely in love with Danaus. I love his character, his passion for his chosen profession, yet his confusion to believe all vampires are monsters when it comes to Mira. But I found that it annoyed me that they stay so distant from each other, claiming that they hate one and other, even as you see them pulling closer, beginning to care. Emotions are bubbling beneath the surface for both of them, but since they're 'sworn' enemies, neither is willing to admit to the emotions that they are feeling. As much as I enjoyed this novel, I miss the romance aspect that this book seemed to be lacking--which also seemed to be hiding in the shadows, but wouldn't be allowed to show itself. It also bothered me beyond words, that she slept with Nicolai. I'm hoping that Dawnbreaker might show us Mira and Danaus give into the passion, temptations and infatuations that constantly surround them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unpredictably Great! After a very strong debut, Drake has really hit the ground running with this second book in the Dark Days series. In this installment, the action picks up right where the first book left off with Mira and Danaus heading into the lion's den, Venice, the home of the vampire Coven. Ordered by her maker, Jabari, to appear before the Coven, Mira must use all her cunning and wits, not to mention her own special ability as a fire starter, to keep from falling prey to the machinations of the vampire court. Filled with plot twists and turns, Dayhunter will keep you guessing and outright surprise you. Mira continues to be a compelling and complex character. Despite her age (over 600 years) she has managed to hold on to a part of her humanity, but then she will do something that has you thinking, "oh yeah, she's a vampire". As I have said before, these are not your sparkly kind of vampires. The Vampire court is full of danger, and the vamps that inhabit the court tend to be the worst the species has to offer, getting off on cruelty, torture and pain. Despite the fact that their very existence is threatened by the Naturi, the Coven seems more interested in bringing Mira to heel and dealing in revenge, not to mention their own secret agenda. The uneasy relationship between Mira and Danaus continues to evolve as they find they must work together to get out of Venice alive. Well written with plenty of heart pounding action, Dayhunter is sure to keep you glued to the pages. I can't wait until the next book, Dawnbreaker, comes out in September (2009).
