about

The first book in a brand new series featuring New York Times bestselling author Denise Swanson's beloved Scumble River setting and characters, Dead in the Water is a gripping mystery that won't let you go until you've turned the last page. A twister, a kidnapping, and a murder-oh my! Scumble River may never be the same. For school psychologist Skye Denison, there's certainly no place like home. When a violent tornado devastates her small hometown of Scumble River, she can't see how the community will ever recover-especially since town councilman Zeke Lyons appears to have perished in the twister. But things get even worse for Skye when her police chief husband, Wally, disappears in the midst of investigating Zeke's death, and evidence arises pointing to foul play. Did Zeke really die in the storm, or was he murdered? And could Wally be next on the criminal's hit list?
DENISE SWANSON is the New York Times bestselling author of the Scumble River and Deveraux?s Dime Store mystery series. She has been nominated for RT Book Review?s Career Achievement Award, the Agatha Award, and the Mary Higgins Clark Award.

Did Zeke really die in the storm, or was he murdered? And could Wally be next on the criminal's hit list? Scumble River is a busy little town that has been hit with a series of unexpected events. With so many things happening is it any wonder Skye is in such a state and determined to find her husband, solve the murder and put her life back in order. From start to end Denise Swanson has built a town and populated it with interesting and likable people. Adding a disaster and a murder to keep your interest fixed firmly on Scumble River. I hope others find this first book in the series as an enjoyable as I did. My rating of "Dead in the Water - Welcome Back to Scumble River Book 1" is 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Swept Away in the Mystery Dead in The Water is the first novel in the Return to Scumble River series. This is my first experience with Scumble River, and it won't be the last! It is summer in Scumble River, and Skye is in the final trimester of her pregnancy. The stormy summer weather produces a tornado, a murder and a kidnapping, leaving Skye to try and cope with the devastation of the disaster as well as solve the murder and the kidnapping of her husband. This is a great book - fast paced with plenty of twists to the mystery. I loved the characters of Scumble River, particularly Skye and Wally's family. Swanson really captures the sense of community during a disaster and just how thin resources are spread. All of the relationships were multi-dimensional and well written. The story never lagged, and the ending was well paced. I cannot wait to see what is in store for Skye and Wally! Also, the cover is absolutely amazing! The only tricky part for me was the number of characters and who was related to who as I had not previously read the Scumble River series. I could have used a cast of characters at the beginning of the book, but this did not deter my reading enjoyment.
