What if our interactions with those different from us are strongly influenced by things happening below the radar of awareness, hidden even from ourselves? Deep Diversity explores this question and argues that “us vs. them” is an unfortunate but normal part of the human experience due to reasons of both nature and nurture.

To really work through issues of racial difference and foster greater levels of fairness and inclusion, argues Shakil Choudhury, requires an understanding of the human mind?its conscious and unconscious dimensions. Deep Diversity integrates Choudhury?s twenty years of experience with interviews with researchers in social neuroscience, implicit bias, psychology, and mindfulness. Using a compassionate but challenging approach, Choudhury helps readers identify their own bias and offers practical ways to break the “prejudice habits” we have all learned, in order to tackle systemic discrimination.

Shakil Choudhury is an award-winning educator and consultant with twenty years experience working with thousands of leaders across four continents on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. He is co-founder of Anima Leadership and lives in Toronto, where his children are teaching him about fatherhood.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Insightful and eye-opening Recommended by a prof, and wow, I learned so much! It really gave me pause and got me to reflect on my own life, my bias, and my privilege. Even as a person of colour, I still carry a lot of bias and this book really pulled back the curtain on many things. Well written, engaging, and accessible.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An Eye-opener In his gentle way, the author establishes some home truths about racism. While making it clear its extreme manifestations are dangerous, he shows how we all harbor elements or traces. The good news is there are very practical ways that individuals can deal with it. The bad news is we have to get that across to our leaders and spokespeople.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb, practical book on diversity and inclusion This is hands-down the most useful, accessible book I have read on strategies for achieving deep, enduring racial equity at the personal, organizational and community level. Choudhury artfully combines cutting edge neuroscience with political theory, analysis and dozens of compelling stories. And he pulls it all together in a simple, compelling 4-part framework for working with our own hearts, bodies, spirits and minds in order to unleash our full individual and collective power as human beings. Whether you work in the business, non-profit or public sector, this book is incredibly readable, informative and practical. “Deep Diversity” should be required reading for every 21st Century leader.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fresh approach to understanding racism and bias This multidisciplinary book combines the personal and the academic. It is well-researched and draws on neuroscience, psychology, and sociology, but it is by no means a dry academic read. Shakil brings his own personal approach to understanding the racism and gives us a way to engage and challenge ourselves through his own observations. The author offers a multi-dimensional approach to power that demonstrates the complexity of bias and its effects. We all have bias and it can be uncovered. I highly recommend this book whether you are new to the field or well experienced.
