about

Daywalker Brynne Kirkland survived a hellish upbringing as a product of a madman’s lab. Tough, driven, and devoted to her work in law enforcement, Brynne has never dared to risk opening her heart to anyone—least of all a handsome immortal from a world on the verge of war against hers.

Atlantean warrior Zael left the intrigue of his realm several lifetimes ago, along with the battles he fought as one of the queen’s legion. As a free-spirited loner walking the fringe of two worlds—that of his secretive and powerful people, and the outside world belonging to mankind and the Breed—it was never his intention to return to combat and bloodshed. Nor had he imagined that he might ever be tempted into anything stronger than desire . . . until he meets Brynne.

Thrust together as allies of the Order in the fight against a diabolical enemy, Zael and Brynne embark on a mission that will ultimately force them to decide between duty to their people, and a passion that defies all bounds.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "Defy the Dawn" by Lara Adrian. Book 14 in the Midnight Breed series. Oh! I loved this book! Zael and Brynne make such a great couple. I really enjoyed this book because along with Zael and Brynne's romance, the overall series story arc involving the Atlantean queen takes a big step forward. Also, a lot of action happens regarding the war with Opus Nostrum. Add in the romance and you have a very exciting book! Zael is an Atlantean and was introduced into the series in "Crave the Night" (Book 12). Brynne is a rare Breed female and Tavia's 1/2 sister and she was just introduced into the series in the last book "Bound to Darkness" (Book 13). Zael has been living his life however he sees fit. Pleasure is a top priority because...why not? But now he has a connection to the Order and he's been asked to pick a side in a war he really wants nothing to do with. Does he side with the Breed, the descendants of the Ancients that almost wiped out all of his people? Or does he side with the Atlantean queen who has been hunting him for years for defecting from her army? Or does he side with his third option and side with his fellow defectors in their hidden colony? How is he supposed to think of any of this when all he can think about is the beautiful Breed female named Brynne who is trying her hardest to push him away? She intrigues him like no other woman ever has and he's not ready to give up on her yet. Brynne's not sure what she's going to do. Her job with JUSTIS was her whole life and now, because she sided with the Order, she's lost her job. Maybe she'll just go back to London and start over. Besides, she's to dangerous to be around people for to long. She may have been raised in an experimental lab like her 1/2 sister Tavia, but her genetics are not the same. There's something inside her that is hard to control. She's better off alone. Until she meets Zael who just won't leave her alone! Like I said, I really enjoyed this book. The banter back and forth between Zael and Brynne is so fun and flirty. But when they get into their backgrounds and feelings for each other, you really get the gist of why they are the way they are. Great sexual chemistry between them. Their romance fits into the overall story of the book really well. As I mentioned, a lot of things happen in this book to further along the overall series story line. I loved the hints about the next two potential romantic couples that could possibly get their stories told. I really enjoyed the ending of this book because I really didn't see it coming! It was a total surprise to me. The overall story line in this book was excellent and flowed really well, keeping my attention the entire time. I really can't wait to read the next book! Or I should say the next novella, "Midnight Untamed" (Book 14.5) which will be out next. Loving this series!
