Settling into the responsibilities and routines of adulthood, Dani Shapiro found herself with more questions than answers. Was this all life was—a hodgepodge of errands, dinner dates, e-mails, meetings, to-do lists? What did it all mean? Having grown up in a deeply religious and traditional family, Shapiro had no personal sense of faith, despite her repeated attempts to create a connection to something greater. Set adrift by loss—her father's early death, the life-threatening illness of her infant son, her troubled relationship with her mother—she recognized the challenge at the heart of her anxiety: What did she believe?

Devotion is a spiritual detective story, a literary excavation to the core of a life. At once poignant, funny, intensely personal, and completely universal, it is the story of a woman whose search for meaning in a constantly changing world ultimately leads her home.

Dani Shapiro is the author of the novelsBlack & WhiteandFamily Historyand the bestselling memoirSlow Motion. Her writing has appeared inThe New Yorker,Granta,Tin House,Elle,Vogue,O, and other publications.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A Bit of a Disappointment I was initially intrigued by the set-up of her spiritual self-examination. But I felt as I read that she never went deep enough into it. It felt surface level to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Complex Look at Families This was the first book I read by Dani Shapiro. I love the way in which Dani weaves her memories, emotions, and insights into past, future, and present day. Most of us have complex issues from our relationships with our first families that show up in disguises decades later making "Devotion" a book that makes one reflect on their own early family relationships and how that has played out in our lives. Dani is a masterful storyteller.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Look at Complexity of Families This was the first book I read by Dani Shapiro. I love her style of writing. The honesty and rawness of her relationship to her parents was like no other I have read. It was relatable in so many ways as most of us do not leave behind the complexity of emotions and relationship issues that come during our first few decades, ones that continue to show up in a disguise throughout the rest of our lives. This book was the gateway to reading more of Dani's work. She is a master at conveying her thoughts and universal truths about living past, future, and present.

Editorial Reviews

“I was on the verge of tears more than once in the course of Dani Shapiro’s impeccably structured spiritual odyssey. But Devotion’s biggest triumph is its voice: funny and unpretentious, concrete and earthy-appealing to skeptics and believers alike. This is a gripping, beautiful story.”
