Ekaette is banished from her late husband’s village in south-eastern Nigeria because she refuses to marry one of his brothers as required by custom. Taking Angel, her toddler daughter, she finds refuge in the home of her Auntie Ima who, with her husband, exploit her as a maidservant (a Housegirl) for many years, during which she is paid next to nothing. Overcome by grief, she eventually dies and Angel is sent to a new home where she works as a nanny under improved conditions. Angel is about 17 when she comes across and is inspired by African American Slave Narratives at a local bookstore. She purchases writing materials and books, and begins to jot down her own life story. She writes from her recollections and from information provided by her late mother. But she gets pregnant and is thrust into a desperate situation that forces her to use murder as an escape tool.
