about

Action-packed police procedural meets dark urban fantasy in a world where cops and wizards are fighting a war over addictive, dangerous, and illegal dirty magic.

Magic is a drug. Careful how you use it.

The last thing patrol cop Kate Prospero expected to find on her nightly rounds was a werewolf covered in the blood of his latest victim. But then, she also didn't expect that shooting him would land her in the crosshairs of the Magic Enforcement Agency, who want to know why she killed their lead snitch.

The MEA keeps dirty magic off the streets, but there's a new blend out there that's as deadly as it is elusive. The more Prospero learns about the investigation, the more she's convinced that earning a spot on their task force is the career break she's been wanting. But getting the assignment proves much easier than solving the case. Especially once the investigation reveals their lead suspect is the man she walked away from ten years earlier-on the same day she swore she'd given up dirty magic for good.

Kate Prospero's about to learn the hard way that crossing a wizard will always get you burned, and that when it comes to magic, you should never say never.

The first book the Prospero's War series from bestselling author Jaye Wells.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Urban Fantasy with Awesome Hero It's been a while since I've read some urban fantasy or anything by Jaye Wells, and now that I've read it, all I can think is: Why did I wait?! This series is so, so, SO GOOD!!! I instantly fell in love with the world and its unique and complex take on magic (there was a lot of explaining about different scenarios regarding "cooking" for magic, but it's clear that Wells did her research), and the characters are great. I love all the well developed side characters, but Kate Prospero is definitely the star here. I love her strong attitude, but what I enjoyed the most was that Kate felt "real." For the most part, she did the smart thing and didn't keep many secrets when the story could have let her. I never had a moment where I was internally shouting "Just tell the truth!" at any point. All the secrets that were kept were ones that will help the series progress and allow the characters to continue to grow, which is exactly what I want. I was completely engaged throughout and can't wait to see where the next story takes me!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent start to a new series I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Jaye Wells, author of the Sabina Kane series. In this new world magic works, but criminals still abound. Our street cop, Kate Prospero, manages to get onto the task force investigating a new, magical, highly addictive drug, and so begins Prospero's War. I'm really looking forward to more stories from this world. Ms. Wells has created a fascinating world peopled with well-developed characters and a fast-paced, action-packed story line. It reminds me of the best of Fringe and the X-Files. This one is definitely worth a look!

"Last year, I wrote that Jaye Wells had the potential to be the next coming of Laurell K. Hamilton and Kim Harrison. This year, I'll amend that slightly: Jaye Wells is the next coming of LKH and Kim Harrison."-www.bn.com on Green-Eyed Demon
