Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Book This was an amazing start to a new dystopian series. Definitely leaves you wanting more at the end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding YA post-apocalyptic sci-fi Veronica Roth’s debut novel is fantastic. I loved the concept of a futuristic society divided into 5 factions (with super cool names): Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (bravery), Erudite (intelligence), Amity (peace), and Candor (honesty). Tris Prior is such a resilient character. This book chronicles her induction into Dauntless after transferring from her home faction Abnegation. I was hooked from beginning to end!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really fun series I read this in my pre teens and it was more enjoyable then. Rereading it was still fun, but the books are meant for young minds. Besides that, it's an amazing story, despite the overused post-apocalyptic theme. I loved it, and I still do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really good I liked the dystopian society. I liked how it wasn't a "chosen one" type story.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Was decent I read this a long time ago, and now I rather find it cheesy. It was a good read overall and many scenes captivated me. If you've heard about it and are planning to see if it's that good, then I would suggest it as something interesting to read but not the best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Average I did enjoy this book, however, I wasn't completely wowed by it compared to other books I've read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I enjoyed this! So, it's been a while since I read this book, but I'm going to try my best to remember my thoughts about this book. The Divergent series is one of my friend's favourite series, and I always wanted to give it a go but I put off reading it. The more I put off reading it, the more I thought I really wouldn't enjoy it. I hadn't read YA in a while when I finally decided to pick this one up, and the ending had already been spoiled for me but I picked it up anyway, and ended up reading it really quickly. I gave this book 3 stars because I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, but I didn't absolutely love it. I was actually quite surprised how hooked I was. We follow the main character, Beatrice Prior, a 16 year old girl who is a member of the Abnegation faction. The members of Abnegation live a very simple life. They wear grey robes, which are plain, like everything else about their lifestyle. Their food, their houses, the rest of their appearance. The members of Abnegation are considered selfless. The lifestyle in Abnegation is very simple, they don't place emphasis on material possessions We learn all about the other factions and the way that their values are. Each faction has a different sort of culture, and values that they hold based on the five personality traits. Each trait makes up a separate faction, which behave differently based on the trait. The rules of the factions are very strict, and the individuals in this society don't have a lot of choice in the way they act, and even how they think. They are supposed to conform to the rules of their society, and as per the typical dystopian plot, the main character feels as if she's an outsider and that she doesn't belong in the Abnegation faction. This is definitely an aspect of the novel that has been done before, the main character is always the outsider. They're different or special, and are tasked with taking down the corrupt government. While the idea of the factions was interesting, I don't really think the plot was super groundbreaking. The way the society is set up in this world is very interesting. I enjoyed learning about the different factions and all the characteristics that made up each one. Though, I do think it is a bit ridiculous to classify people based on a few singular aspects of their personality. Because personality varies so much, the children of each family must take part in the Choosing Ceremony when they reach the age of 16. The ceremony includes a series of tasks examines all the aspects of their personality, to see which faction they belong in. This book reminded me a bit of The Hunger Games, but I think it's because the factions reminded me of the different districts, and the very obviously corrupt government. There was a lot of world building within this book, which is understandable because it's the beginning of the series and everything needs to be set up. But I was so intrigued. The society definitely isn't one that you could see as being plausible in the future. It doesn't have that creep factor that dystopians can have when you think about how the world could end up this way. In fact, the world is really bizarre, and I think that's what kept me intrigued. I wanted to know what weird things the factions would do. The Dauntless faction is by far the most bizarre. I didn't understand how they could just behave like complete idiots and call themselves "fearless." However, by the end of novel, you begin to understand what's happening to the government and the factions. Even though I found myself rolling my eyes a few times at the faction's views and some of the character's behaviour, I still found the characters likeable. I sometimes have a hard time relating to the characters when I read YA now. I feel like I can't really get into their heads and really empathize with them. I was actually invested in the characters while I was reading, and I cared what happened to them and wanted to know more. I was also really rooting for Four and Tris to become a thing, even though I do wish that YA could be devoid of romance just once. The main character doesn't always need to have a love interest. Some parts seems slightly slower than some others, but I think that has to do with the world building and information that the author had to give us. Around the end of the book was when things started to get interesting. I really didn't see the ending coming, the fact that the Dauntless were trying to use the initiates as soldiers. WHAT? So good! Overall, I would recommend this book. I think if you like dystopian YA, I think you'd enjoy this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from If you love The Hunger Games, you'll love Divergent An amazing story that is so easy to get lost in. Reading about Beatrice choosing between what she wants and her family, and going along with her while she grows is amazing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect for fans of action-adventure and the Hunger Games A great adventure with a twist on modern day life and a demonstration of what life could potentially be like in the future. With fight and action scenes this book it's great for both guys and girls who enjoy exciting reads. The story gets even better as you progress into the following books and you'll find yourself immersed in an intense new world!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just Another Dystopia There was one point in time where everyone was reading this book! In school, all the people were reading Divergent and all talking about which faction they would be in and excetera. This book will remind you of The Hunger Games, Maze Runner, or any other strong lead that deals with a dystopia and how the main characters have to fight in a world that is corrupted! I started reading this book this year because I was getting tired of all the books like The Hunger Games and more because they were basically the same thing: A strong female lead with a bunch of supporting strong characters who fight to break the corrupted government. I thought this book was going to be just like the other ones and I was getting tired of it, but this book was somehow different. because it had some other elements that were incorporated into it, such as factions, and a weak character developing into a strong character. Also, it talked about themes like family, romance and love which I have to be honest, very similarly corresponds to The Hunger Games. However, what surprised me with this book was how relatable it was. When Tris felt guilty or she was in love, it was reltable at certain points in the story, and I could relate more to it than lets say The Hunger Games, because Tris was a character who started out not brave and ended up joining the most reckless and wild faction: Dauntless. As well, the book allows you to relate with the character. However, the reason why I am only giving it three stars is because it is very much like the other Dystopia and it almost feels all too predictable. The plot, and characters are very closely resembled to previous ones like The Hunger Games and it makes the entire story seem like a different version of The Hunger Games or lets say The Maze Runner. This book is too similar and it almost seems like a copycat of the other series. I was not interested to read it in the beginning because I was like "oh it's just another dystopia". I would say that it is a good book for people looking for a book similar to previous dystopias but it is not that different and I would say that the concept of it is very cool and the cover looks amazing, but it gets tiring and boring at some point when there's too many dystopian novels all with similar story lines.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome Read I bought this book a while ago as a novel study. I though it'd be one of those regular old si-fi fantasy books; boy was I wrong. It was a marvellous read and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through, I defiantly recommend this book if you are looking for some si-fi, futuristic, romance type of read. Enjoy!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay It was an interesting plot, however it seems typical for a dystopian novel where society is organized in a certain way and the main character is somehow a unique case.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not sure why all these super hyped up books are so bad It was sub par...the characters weren't very interesting and there was almost too much going on...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was hesitant to read this; "It's just another hyped-up YA series". I wasn't in a rush to read this series ... I bought it anyways because it was on sale. My mother actually ended up reading it before me, and she fell in love with it. She's not a big YA reader, so she liked it, I thought it must be good. I'm glad I did! I guess some YA series are hyped-up for a reason.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Addictive novel I read this book two years ago, so maybe my opinion would've changed, but I remember deeply loving this book. The story is addictive, easy to read and the characters were fun to read about. It's overall a great dystopian novel. A bit cliché sometimes, but hey, thirteen year old me didn't mind!
Date published: 2017-05-22
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great fun! Definitely not the most skillfully written if we're talking about technical mastery but it was VERY interesting, and held my attention through the whole book. Unfortunately this is by far the best book of the series and if you haven't heard by now, I can tell you that the movies are awful. Quite sad, considering how much fun this first foray into Tris' world was.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This was an amazing read I watched the films before I read the books. I certainly found the books to be a great read and the film to be on point with what I was expecting. I would recommended this book to any of my friends.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good read Another dystopian teen novel that is exciting and fun to read. You really identify with Tris and really want her to succeed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this book !!! I love this book so much that i find myself reading it more than I read any of my other books. I love the way the words are nicely written together, and the variety of word choice that was used. Evertime a chapter ended, always left me wanting to read more, even when I couldn't read. This series is one of my favorites because of the character development and how everything is just so different and out of the ordinary. Reading the books, i saw something completely different then the movies, and as always the books are way better! I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for suspense and romance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible!! A LOT of action, I loved it!!
Date published: 2017-05-18
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Liked This was an action packed and strong heroine kind of novel. I liked the characters and the world was interesting. Even though it was action packed parts of the story were slow, Tris tends to repeat her thoughts quite a bit. As with all the divergent books for me, something felt off or wrong about the writing or the story. I know people are often cruel and the characters are certainly true to human nature but the story was just so far out there that it was hard for me to suspend my disbelief. I liked the characters a lot and I felt for them but the feeling was very distracting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comparable to Hunger Games Was decent as the start to a new series. Shared many similarities with the hunger games series. Still intriguing and has its own set of plot twists.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! This book was absolutely amazing! It took me a little while to get into the story, but once I didn't I didn't want to put the book down. It was very refreshing to have a female character, especially one who is true to herself and isn't afraid to go with her gut, even if it means letting her family down. Despite the fact that some events were predictable, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Out of the whole Divergent series, this one is by far my favourite as it is the most exciting and the most well-written. It gives off some Hunger Games vibes but the story and its world are completely different. It is a very action packed book in terms of both physical action and dramatic action. Fundamentally, its one of the better books I've read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just Too Much Divergent is an extremely junky read. Sort of like eating a bag of chips. While enjoyable, after it's over, you're left feeling uncomfortably full and wondering why you did that to yourself. It's a good read but it's just too much. It's like watching a Blockbuster action flick and wishing there was just a little bit more of a storyline and not so many car chases and gunshots. Still, it's good. And I think it's good for teens. I'm not sure if I'll continue to read the rest of the trilogy. I think I might actually be better off watching the films.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Devoured it! I read this book in about 24 hours - it grabs you from the beginning, pulls you in and you just won't be able to put it down! As a dystopian book, I do think it could've been better in some ways, but overall I would still give it 5 stars. Great book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good Just started the series and I was impressed with the first book (the movie however, not so much). I'm not really a sci-fi reader but I was intrigued with story line. I found the authors take on dystopian culture interesting in terms of the factions. It is not hard to believe a society like this would fall apart to be left with a 16 year girl who is now torn between a first love, friend and family as she tries to figure out where she belongs and what she is capable of.
Date published: 2017-03-21
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not for me I enjoy well-written and imaginative dystopian fiction, and loved The Hunger Games, but I did not like Divergent. The story was too dark and the future felt too hopeless. The characters failed to engage me. #plumreview
Date published: 2017-03-21
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good...But Not at the Same Time To me, this series is very similar to the Hunger Games. The concept is great and there's good build-up in the first book. But the others don't measure up and you just end up disappointed in the story in the end. I wouldn't go further than the first one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Dystopian Read! If you liked the Hunger Games and you like dystopian novels, this book is for you. I really enjoyed this book, but the last 2 books just went downhill from this. Especially the last book I disliked. This is one of my favourite books, but not my favourite trilogy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good read I would give this book 3.5 stars. It was a good book, but I think I read it too soon after reading the hunger games series. To me, there were a lot of similarities, being a dystopian book/series. Therefore I enjoyed reading this book, yet I just got annoyed at how similar the story was to the hunger games. I did enjoy the character of Tris, a strong independent girl thrust into a world that is new to her. I like the sense of adventure in the story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING!!! I consider myself a slow reader, and take a week or two to read a book, but I scarfed this one down in three days!!! By far, this is my favourite sic-fi novel of all time. There is so much suspense throughout the novel, but at the end, it turns out that the conflict was right in front of me the whole time. I definitely recommend this book to everyone, but beware, it is action packed amazingness and makes the reader strongly feel Tris, the main character's feelings, emotions and growth with it's thorough description all throughout the novel!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Series I finally got a chance to read the entire trilogy and I have to say that I loved it from beginning to end. It's not typically a genre that I read and having been disappointed in the first movie, I was hoping the books would be better. I was not disappointed. I didn't want to put them down until I knew exactly what happened to everyone, not just in the city itself but the world outside.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Strong characters These books were better than I expected. I loved the equally strong characters..male and female. Things got complex enough with characters and their motives to keep me interested through the whole series.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good For Younger People If you're searching for YA novels that mirror the Hunger Games then this is definitely a place to start. The plots of the two are eerily similar in quite a few ways, a fact that you wouldn't mind if you enjoyed the Hunger Games, but for me it was a bit of a disappointment. There are quite a few flaws present in the story, and each character seems to exist just to fulfill a popular trope, the heroine, the best friend, the dark and mysterious love interest. It fits almost exactly into the YA stereotypes and is actually quite predictable in its events. I would still say that this is the best book in the series, but overall it was not my favourite, especially since I read this after I had passed through my 'Hunger Games' phase

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay The first book was pretty good but then the series kind of got boring until the end. The sudden surprise at the end was more of a why factor, like why did they have to do it. It didn't seem right the way they ended the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Forget the movie - read the book Of the book-movie divides that exist within any franchised fan club, I fall strongly within the book category. There are a lot of things that the movie changed or couldn't quite capture. It's what EVERYONE always says about ANY BOOK made into a movie. But it is true. The writing isn't going to make you weep but the plot is quite original - as far as dystopian teen novels go...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeps Getting Better For me, this book was difficult to get through at first. However, I kept pushing forward and am I glad that I did! The more I read, the better the book got! Soon this book was filled with action, romance, and suspense. I just couldn't put it down until I finished reading it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Little Overhyped I was very excited at the prospect of reading this novel. But as I read, I could not figure out why this book was being praised so much. The characters were cliché and predictable, especially for YA dystopian fiction. It was a fun read though, with the story being enjoyable enough. Out of the trilogy, this one is the best by far.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Book I liked this book. Liked the strong female who was just herself trying to find her way. Its a slightly different take on how society is divided in the dystopian future. Fun to discuss with friends on what faction you think you would be yourself. #plumreview

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nothing special 2.5 stars. Not impressed. The whole premise is unconvincing and doesn't make much sense. How can a society function when its members are divided in such an artificial way? Plus some of the plot was so cliched...The good thing is that I didn't expect much so I wasn't really disappointed. Just one more dystopian story that probably became popular mostly because of the fighting scenes and the violence. Not sure if I'll bother reading Insurgent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoyed It! I really enjoyed Divergent. It was unlike anything I've read before. Tris is a super strong and brave 16 year old girl who has to adapt to a different lifestyle after transferring from Abnegation (selfless) to Dauntless (brave) in a dystopian version of Chicago that is divided into factions. I loved all the action and stunts the Dauntless do and the chemistry between Tris and Four. There was also quite a bit of violence, death, brutality and some cruel characters but nonetheless it was still a captivating read! I would recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for something that will keep you on the edge of your seat and up all night!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Alright I like the storyline but it has that unmistakable feeling of teen fiction to it: underdeveloped characters, fast-paced storyling and poorly built setting. That being said, I will continue on reading the series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing This was my favourite book from the series. It's a good read if you're craving some distopian action. Tris is a character you can relate to, and you'll fall in love with Four. It is quite a hyped up book, but it does live up to the hype, at least the first one does. Insurgent and Allegiant were lacking a little and sometimes a lot.
