In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue-Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is-she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are-and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Veronica Roth is theNew York Timesbestselling author ofDivergent, the first in a trilogy of dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great read All the hype around this book has definitely not being an exaggeration, it is an excellent book. I absolutely loved this book and was unable to put it down! I honestly prefered this book over the hunger games. I enjoy storylines that have a strong female protagonist and this book delivered that. It is has great characters and a great plot and I could not recommend this book enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Dystopian Novel I had originally never been interested in this book, but after quite a few recommendations and curiosity I finally read this and it was an amazing decision. I loved the new dystopian world and the characters (especially Four). The beginning of the book instantly captured my attention and I could not put the book down at all. This book was action-packed, and I loved the references to the present-day Chicago. The best book in the series, and an amazing read

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Go-to post Hunger Games book A lot of people recommend Divergent post-hunger games, and I think that the rating for Divergent might suffer because of it. The Hunger Games was a wonderful popular series, 5 stars easily, and Divergent wasn't quite as good (partly, I think, because The Hunger Games seems to intentionally build towards events that Divergent makes up as it goes along). But it was still great! I think Divergent is still a 5 star book even if it's a smidge inferior to Hunger Games. Other great post-Hunger Games books: City of Bones, and Six of Crows.
Date published: 2017-01-03
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book. If you are into books like the Hunger Games then you should definitely read this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Dystopia Novel I'm a huge fan of young adult dystopian novels and have read most of the major dystopian series/novels. Hands down, Divergent was my favourite book out of all of the dystopias I've read. I don't enjoy the rest of the series quite so much but to this day Divergent is easily my favourite dystopia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVED THIS. This book is incredible. However, the next two books were not as great. But divergent was incredible! I finished it in a day, which is rare since I normally take a week or two to finish a book.

Date published: 2016-12-05
Rated 4 out of 5 by from :) I liked the book because it was a completely different concept than other dystopian novels that I've read. It was a pretty enjoyable read.
Date published: 2016-12-04
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Overrated Okay start to the series, but it copies a lot of ideas from other popular books, and I doubt it would have gotten so popular without the movie.
Date published: 2016-12-04
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Read it Once; That's All I Need This book had a lot of flaws (especially in the logic of the society), but if you don't over-analyse them, I suppose it can still be fairly entertaining. I have no intention of ever reading it again, however.
Date published: 2016-12-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome I got this book for Christmas and was so excited to read.I literally finished the book in 2 days!! Veronica Roth is such an amazing author and I really recommend this book; especially for The Hunger Games lovers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good my favourite of the series. i enjoyed it.
Date published: 2016-12-02
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh It's clearly riding on the coat tails of the Hunger Games and the entire premise that the story is based on is flawed. If you can accept that the complexity of human beings can be distilled into just 4 groups, then you'll enjoy this book far more than some people will.
Date published: 2016-12-01
Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE! Perfect for fans of the hunger games! In my opinion it was even better with more interesting characters and a more unique plot
Date published: 2016-11-30
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good This may not be the best book since it is typical but it is enjoyable. I got hooked into it even though there are some issues with it. I still like it though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the Hunger Games... Or the start was.... I got more drawn into Tris's story than Hunger Games. She and Four draw you into them. The book very much captures it. Very much enjoyed it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome Read LOVED this series, even if not the most original thing in the world. The writing was fantastic and the characters really grab you - especially Tris, and the voice she brings. Maybe it's not everyone's thing, but I found the series impossible to put down and don't think it deserves quite the amount of flak it's gotten. #plumreview
Date published: 2016-11-20
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Interesting Read Enjoyed it but not sure if I would want to move on and read the others but still good. #plumreview
Date published: 2016-11-19
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! I read this and it was one of the best books I've read this year but a little too romantic.
Date published: 2016-11-19
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Great start to a great series! Pulls you right into the Divergent world.
Date published: 2016-11-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from divergent is so so good i loved it, and i think i reread it like four times!!
Date published: 2016-11-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it #plumrewards. The author opened up and showed us this world of hers that she had created and drew me in right from the beginning. A definite read
Date published: 2016-11-18
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Copped out of a good ending The novel had an interesting premise and I loved that idea of the different factions. However, the novel cops out half way through and ends up getting really political in a way that ruins the story. The rest of the story became boring and very political.
Date published: 2016-11-17
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just not my type of book I personally did not enjoy this book at all and couldn't stand reading it. The story is boring and I didn't like the characters. I was frustrated reading the book and wanted to stop reading it, but I had to keep reading it. I thought this would be an interesting book at first. This book is well written though. #plumreview
Date published: 2016-11-15
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good A good read, but not as good as The Hunger Games, both in terms of plot and writing style. The romantic storyline was better developed than The Hunger Games though. If you've read The Hunger Games, it's really difficult not to compare the two. #plumreview
Date published: 2016-11-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I kept seeing this book in stores and I wanted to read it because I thought it would be good. It wasn't until I picked it up that I realised I was wrong; the story was great and so were the characters.
Date published: 2016-11-14
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Movie Was Better In my opinion the movie showcases a lot better then the book! But still a good read for the series lovers.
Date published: 2016-11-14
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but not great ** spoiler alert ** I must admit I was a little deceived by the book. Don't get me wrong, I really liked it, but I saw the movie before reading the book and I preferred the movie. I like reading dystopian books, so I really liked the plot. The idea of the factions reminded me of The Hunger Games which I read and loved. The only thing I didn't like in this book was the way the two main characters act. Four likes Tris and he knows that she is Divergent. He's doing everything to help her, but since he doesn't want anyone to know about it she misunderstand about everything he does. Then Tris is angry and she snaps at Four, who tells her that she doesn't understand... This happens more than once during the book and I found it to be a little annoying since it seems like both of them never learn anything from the last time they fought. Aside from that, it's a very great book and I would recommended it to young adults who like dystopian books.
Date published: 2016-11-14
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Climactic Start I actually seen the movies to this series first, which in my opinion, makes the books so much better. You can imagine the book coming to life and it keeps sucking you in until the very end. Upon finishing I couldn't wait to get the next book in the series.
Date published: 2016-11-14
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great So great couldn't put it down!!
Date published: 2016-11-14
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Another YA dystopian novel It's an easy, fun read if you aren't sick of all the dystopian fiction yet. #plumreview
Date published: 2016-11-14
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Read I read this book a while back but I remember it being such a good book. I am definitely going to reread it in the future.
Date published: 2016-11-13
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this book! This book was very descriptive and had a great plot line. Was a great story to read.
Date published: 2016-11-13
Rated 3 out of 5 by from If you're into Dystopia If you're really into young adult dystopia, then this is exactly what you're looking for. Uses every single trope you can imagine, but can also be sort of enjoyable.
Date published: 2016-11-13
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Absolute Favorite Book This book is the best i have ever read, however just a heads up the other books in the series don't come close to being as good. This book is still worth reading on its own though! You won't regret purchasing it!
Date published: 2016-11-09
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not bad Recommended to read this by a friend and glad I did. #plumreview
Date published: 2016-11-09
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay It copies a bit of other series before it, and it isn't anything unique. However, it was fairly interesting to read though not in the least stimulating. The rest of the series got continuously worse, but this was the best out of the trilogy in my opinion.
Date published: 2016-11-08
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great story Amazing book so does the movie, loved it more than Hunger Games. Will recommend to everyone.
Date published: 2016-11-08

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay Generic, not very unique but it was a good light read.
Date published: 2016-11-07
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Alright I love dystopic writing but I was a little disappointed with this, to be honest. It was not very unique and the concept was more or less the same as other dystopian books that came before it. It was not a bad read, but with all the praise I was really hoping for something a little more exciting.
Date published: 2016-11-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book! I recently re-read this first book in the series. I had read it about 3 years ago and loved it, so I was excited to get all of the books last Christmas. The love story is amazing and the characters are written about so amazingly that you fall in love with them. Great series, couldn't put it down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My all time favourite book! Let me start off by saying I've had this book for 2/3 years now but every time I opened it I was never able to get past the first 2 pages as it didn't grab my attention right away. However, this summer my family and I decided to go on a 14 hour road trip and listening to music wasn't going to keep boredom from striking me so I decided to take this book with me. I forced myself to get past the first couple pages and by the second chapter I was hooked! Honestly, I read it for hours and was even sometimes forced to read in the dark and even then I wasn't able to put the book down! Just ordered Insurgent and I'm extremely hyped to read it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good easy read Unfortunately I watched the movie before reading this book, which probably influenced my opinion about it. But even if I liked the movie better, I found the book to be very good. I read it in just a few hours and I didn't want to stop. Read the first and the second in the series on one day. I find (compared to the movie) that the timeline and the order that things happen to be slightly confusing, but I don't want to that to affect my rating since I am sure I wouldn't have reacted to it had I not seen the movie. The writing is good and I find it easy to read and it just enough amount descriptions to make me feel the surroundings etc. I couldn't stop reading and I always felt like I needed to know what happened so I had to keep going. I feel like there may be a bit too many characters present in the book and it can at times get confusing who's who and all that, but overall I think Veronica Roth did a great job with this book. Somehow though, I failed to connect with Tris. I honestly feel like she's whiny and annoying. I only kept reading cause I liked Four. I would have rather had this story from his POV. But I may also be biased here because of the movie (which I really liked) and I can't say what reaction I would have had to his character had I not seen it on TV beforehand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good, but not amazing I actually started this book last summer . I read through the first few chapters of the novel and when the year got busy, completely stopped reading and restarted this summer. In my opinion, it has a really slow beginning that is not very captivating, which made it hard to get into. I would have preferred if it grasped me right from the beginning. Although it did have lots of action, the action was not very "action-packed". The events that took place in the novel were not "heart racers". The most interesting part was probably the end of the book. Despite not being as action-packed as I would have liked, the novel contained some very interesting ideas about fear and human instinct. These notions, along with my general interest in romance, is enough to keep me reading on in the series.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Divergent Set in an unknown post apocolyptic world, when young people come of age they have to choose what personality faction they will be part of. They can remain in the faction in which they were born or can choose to move to a different faction where they will be trained & tested to see if they meet the standards of the new choice. If they do not pass they become factionless and join the group of nameless people living in the burnt out ruins of the city. This is different, but will make you think of the Hunger Games. I may read the second book, but no guarantees on that.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointingly simple I love fantasy and sci-fi, and usually enjoy YA series in the genres. I tore through Harry Potter, I devoured The Hunger Games (sorry), heck, I even enjoyed The Mortal Instruments. My work friends told me I'd love Divergent. Realizing that these are the same people who told me I'd love Twilight *shudder* and 50 Shades of (dull) Grey, I took their advice with a grain of salt, but hoped for the best. I was looking forward to discovering Roth's world and learning about its interesting social divisions. Meh. It's not bad, it's just not mind-blowing. The story unfolds too slowly and predictably, and doesn't really tell us anything about ourselves we didn't know. Young teens and people who don't mind reading books strictly written for that age group will likely enjoy the book. It's a fairly light, easy, inoffensive read that doesn't really break any new ground, but will appeal to those who like their dystopian sci-fi on the easy-to-digest side.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Captivated from start to finish I bought this book for my younger brother for Christmas two years ago. After seeing the film, I borrowed the book. It took me two days to read it. I loved it! It kept me captivated from beginning to end and I didn't want to put it down. The plot and characters are fantastic and the way in which Roth writes is so vivid that your imagination can picture everything perfectly. I enjoyed the book MUCH more than the film, which is a bonus in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING! I bought this book just yesterday. I needed a new book to read (I was desperately book-less) and so naturally, I went to Chapters/Indigo and bought myself this little guy. I.. absolutely could NOT STOP READING this! The way it's written captures you from that first page. I knew I had to buy this book. And so I read it cover-to-cover today. I don't see any flaws, but the way it's written just takes my breath away. I won't give any spoilers, but in the last book (Allegiant) somebody dies. I wonder who ;) Thank you Veronica Roth for this AMAZING PERFECT CREATIVE BOOK!!!! Can't believe something this amazing exists around here. Gosh it's fantastic!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST BOOK EVER!!!! The only reason I ever started this book was because my best friend wouldn't shut up about it. Also because, The movie was a week from coming out and my Best friend really wanted me to read it. She bought the book for me and FORCED me to read it. When I first started this book, it felt weird, 5 factions? Chicago? It was all confusing, but that confusion only lasted for about 3 pages. Veronica really knows how to write a book. From Cover to Cover, there was not ONE part where i felt like abandoning the book. NOT ONCE!! This book explained everything so well! The descirptions NEVER being too long, or too short. She provided a great visual, and the story was just GREAT! This book is about 16 year old Tris, who is born in the faction of Abnegation, who believe in Selflesness. No matter how much she tries, she just can't seem to fit in like her brother and family seem to in Abnegation. When choosing day comes around, she makes a choice that will change her forever. In her new faction, she finds herself, and finally figures out who she is. As war is unfolding in their perfect world, Tris has a secret. A secret that can stop all of this. But can also take her live, and those she loves. The Character of Tris, is perfect. She is portrayed as a *Little Girl* who is descovering herself. She is brave, and easy to relate to. The book is told in her point of view, and is just perfect that way. The Character of *Four* is just drooling hot........ sorry, got lost. Anyways, he is strong, brave, and nver looks at Tris like a *little Girl*. You get to know him through Tris's eyes, but the extra book in the series "Four" really shows you his life before meeting Tris, and gives you a better look at him. I just can't say enough about him, but i'll let you discover him, instead of me giving everything away. The same Goes for Tris. The chemistry between *Four* and Tris was just so.. aniurhuivbnsknrskbdj!!! I love both of them. There are not words to describe how awesome they are. Their pair is just so, great. And as much as i want *Four*, I love him with Tris. This book was fast paced, suspenceful, romantic, and had EVERYTHING in it! It was just so PERFECT!! Not ONE dull moment. In conclusion, I recomend this book to anyone. I hated reading, before my friend made me start this book, and now; i can Safely say it was the best desision i ever made. For the Fans of The Hunger Games , PJO, , and The Maze Runner, this book is a great book. If you can scrolling down to see what others say about this book, I say: READ IT!
