about

This first book in Veronica Roth's #1 New York Times bestselling Divergent trilogy is the novel that inspired the major motion picture starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet. This dystopian series set in a futuristic Chicago has captured the hearts of millions of teen and adult readers.

Perfect for fans of the Hunger Games and Maze Runner series, Divergent and its sequels, Insurgent and Allegiant—plus Four: A Divergent Collection, four stories told from the perspective of the character Tobias—are the gripping story of a dystopian world transformed by courage, self-sacrifice, and love. Fans of the Divergent movie will find the book packed with just as much emotional depth and exhilarating action as the film, all told in beautiful, rich language.

The paperback edition includes bonus materials created by Veronica Roth, including her essays on Utopian worlds and how she named the factions, writing tips, a Q&A, a Divergent playlist, faction manifestos, and an excerpt from Insurgent

One choice can transform you. Beatrice Prior's society is divided into five factions—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Beatrice must choose between staying with her Abnegation family and transferring factions. Her choice will shock her community and herself. But the newly christened Tris also has a secret, one she's determined to keep hidden, because in this world, what makes you different makes you dangerous.

Supports the Common Core State Standards

Veronica Roth is the #1New York Timesbestselling author ofDivergent,Insurgent,Allegiant, andFour: A Divergent Collection. Now a full-time writer, Ms. Roth and her husband live near Chicago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoyed the Book When I bought Divergent, I was expecting a good storyline. Divergent did exactly that. This book is really good, especially if you liked the Hunger Games series. I would definitely recommend this book (as a matter of fact, this entire series) to anyone who has read the Hunger Games.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All time favourite book! I was given this as a gift a long time ago and I was hesitant at first to read it. I am so glad I did because I have reread it 7 times now and still adore it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good The ideas have been a little overdone. Whether she wrote it first or someone else, nevertheless they have been used. While the story was still interesting, I found it to be a little predictable at times as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overhyped and Bland The story felt like it was stolen from The Giver but was revamped for a modern audience. It wasn't that great and the world building seemed really flimsy. Especially when a person having more than one trait would mean that you CONVERGENT, not DIVERGENT. And it's so weird too because a person can be more than one personality trait. Seemed like Veronica Roth took the Hogwarts Houses too seriously and decided to write an entire series based on it...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too much hype I read this book because I felt I should try to finally read it. It was okay, it is very similar to The Hunger Games but I did like this book a like more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from really good. I liked this book quite a bit. I love the universe that Veronica Roth. The characters were really well developed and shown. Though this is a dystopian novel, I somehow found it relateable. Anyway, if you haven't read thi book already you should definetely give it a shot. Usually I'm not a fan of dystropain novels, but I really enjoyed this book. Veronica Roth did a good job of leaving eveyone a little something that they can realate to.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I guess it's ok? Entertaining, but I just can't come to terms with its universe, I just can't! Anyway, we'll see what's next.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE IT!! Divergent is such a good book, I suggest if you have read the book, don't even watch the movie. The movie ruined it for me. The book was so well done, it kept me up at night just to keep reading. It was action packed and emotional.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Alright Was a decent book, and started off great because I thought a book much like the Hunger Games, but eventually the story just felt forced.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from ok Great for a quick read or if you're coming from a reading slump
Date published: 2018-01-22
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Fun Read I found the characters personalities quite likeable. The story was unique on it's own, which in itself made it enjoyable to read. I found it easy to follow, but was disappointed by the lack of being left on the edge of my seat, as that type of story might suggest. The series definitely got better as it continued on, and I felt it became more exciting. The relationships between characters were interesting and well built, which made them appear realistic. A good read for teens.
Date published: 2018-01-21
Rated 3 out of 5 by from A quick read to fly through This has an interesting premise and a somewhat unique plot, but the writing was so simplistic for the target audience and I never felt that the characters went beyond two-dimensionality. Regardless, this was a fun book to read!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from no it is a fun read, but on a critical stand point, many of the decisions seemed pointless and the main character was furiously unlikeable. But, if you want to read something quick and fun, maybe give it a try.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great YA Fiction This is a great YA novel. I love that this features a female protagonist who is not caught up in a love triangle. I thought the takes on personality types and putting yourself in boxes in interesting and important to read as a teenager figuring things out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wild Ride I decided to reread Divergent for the i-don't-know-how-many-times-i've-read-this-book, when I found out that I would be traveling to Chicago in the spring of 2017. I knew that the entire Divergent story takes place directly inside Chicago, so I was super excited to see some of the sights, and places that are mentioned in the book. I was basically on my own Divergent tour through Chicago, and it was super fun. This book remains to be a favourite for me. I ship Tris and Four a lot. Four is perfect. I want him to be real. I ship me and Four more than I ship Tris and Four. Maybe I have problem. Maybe I don't care.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favourite Book Ever! Amazing book, completely different from the movie. This novel was amazing because it contained so much action and romance. It's a sci-fi novel, about a dystopian society, so it was very thrilling and action packed. The writing was amazing, as it constantly allowed me to feel so much emotion from each of the characters. It was as if I was in the shoes of each character, and could sense everything they could. I loved the book and it was my favourite for quite some time.

Date published: 2017-12-08
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fine, not great Riding in with the tide of YA Dystopian popularity, it's no big surprise that Divergent got as famous as it did. Unfortunately, there isn't much left to the series once the hype and marketing died down. The futuristic society is arranged more as a philosophical thought experiment than as something realistic, but it's the kiddie version of philosophy - "what if we defined people's personalities based on a single trait?" Even that much is forgivable, but the series loses its focus after the first book, and becomes downright silly by the third. A passable read, but not worth seeking out.
Date published: 2017-12-06
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Divergent A good book. Interesting dystopian future concept. Didn't hook me enough to keep reading the rest of the series though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best books I've read Divergent is compared to The Hunger Games a lot and while it is about a strong female character living in a dystopian world, it is very much not the same. Divergent is equally as entertaining and kept me on the edge of my seat. I would also recommend reading Veronica Roth's novella, Four, after you've read the books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding YA post-apocalyptic sci-fi Veronica Roth’s debut novel is fantastic. I loved the concept of a futuristic society divided into 5 factions (with super cool names): Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (bravery), Erudite (intelligence), Amity (peace), and Candor (honesty). Tris Prior is such a resilient character. This book chronicles her induction into Dauntless after transferring from her home faction Abnegation. I was hooked from beginning to end!

Date published: 2017-07-17
Rated 3 out of 5 by from I enjoyed this! So, it's been a while since I read this book, but I'm going to try my best to remember my thoughts about this book. The Divergent series is one of my friend's favourite series, and I always wanted to give it a go but I put off reading it. The more I put off reading it, the more I thought I really wouldn't enjoy it. I hadn't read YA in a while when I finally decided to pick this one up, and the ending had already been spoiled for me but I picked it up anyway, and ended up reading it really quickly. I gave this book 3 stars because I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, but I didn't absolutely love it. I was actually quite surprised how hooked I was. We follow the main character, Beatrice Prior, a 16 year old girl who is a member of the Abnegation faction. The members of Abnegation live a very simple life. They wear grey robes, which are plain, like everything else about their lifestyle. Their food, their houses, the rest of their appearance. The members of Abnegation are considered selfless. The lifestyle in Abnegation is very simple, they don't place emphasis on material possessions We learn all about the other factions and the way that their values are. Each faction has a different sort of culture, and values that they hold based on the five personality traits. Each trait makes up a separate faction, which behave differently based on the trait. The rules of the factions are very strict, and the individuals in this society don't have a lot of choice in the way they act, and even how they think. They are supposed to conform to the rules of their society, and as per the typical dystopian plot, the main character feels as if she's an outsider and that she doesn't belong in the Abnegation faction. This is definitely an aspect of the novel that has been done before, the main character is always the outsider. They're different or special, and are tasked with taking down the corrupt government. While the idea of the factions was interesting, I don't really think the plot was super groundbreaking. The way the society is set up in this world is very interesting. I enjoyed learning about the different factions and all the characteristics that made up each one. Though, I do think it is a bit ridiculous to classify people based on a few singular aspects of their personality. Because personality varies so much, the children of each family must take part in the Choosing Ceremony when they reach the age of 16. The ceremony includes a series of tasks examines all the aspects of their personality, to see which faction they belong in. This book reminded me a bit of The Hunger Games, but I think it's because the factions reminded me of the different districts, and the very obviously corrupt government. There was a lot of world building within this book, which is understandable because it's the beginning of the series and everything needs to be set up. But I was so intrigued. The society definitely isn't one that you could see as being plausible in the future. It doesn't have that creep factor that dystopians can have when you think about how the world could end up this way. In fact, the world is really bizarre, and I think that's what kept me intrigued. I wanted to know what weird things the factions would do. The Dauntless faction is by far the most bizarre. I didn't understand how they could just behave like complete idiots and call themselves "fearless." However, by the end of novel, you begin to understand what's happening to the government and the factions. Even though I found myself rolling my eyes a few times at the faction's views and some of the character's behaviour, I still found the characters likeable. I sometimes have a hard time relating to the characters when I read YA now. I feel like I can't really get into their heads and really empathize with them. I was actually invested in the characters while I was reading, and I cared what happened to them and wanted to know more. I was also really rooting for Four and Tris to become a thing, even though I do wish that YA could be devoid of romance just once. The main character doesn't always need to have a love interest. Some parts seems slightly slower than some others, but I think that has to do with the world building and information that the author had to give us. Around the end of the book was when things started to get interesting. I really didn't see the ending coming, the fact that the Dauntless were trying to use the initiates as soldiers. WHAT? So good! Overall, I would recommend this book. I think if you like dystopian YA, I think you'd enjoy this.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just Another Dystopia There was one point in time where everyone was reading this book! In school, all the people were reading Divergent and all talking about which faction they would be in and excetera. This book will remind you of The Hunger Games, Maze Runner, or any other strong lead that deals with a dystopia and how the main characters have to fight in a world that is corrupted! I started reading this book this year because I was getting tired of all the books like The Hunger Games and more because they were basically the same thing: A strong female lead with a bunch of supporting strong characters who fight to break the corrupted government. I thought this book was going to be just like the other ones and I was getting tired of it, but this book was somehow different. because it had some other elements that were incorporated into it, such as factions, and a weak character developing into a strong character. Also, it talked about themes like family, romance and love which I have to be honest, very similarly corresponds to The Hunger Games. However, what surprised me with this book was how relatable it was. When Tris felt guilty or she was in love, it was reltable at certain points in the story, and I could relate more to it than lets say The Hunger Games, because Tris was a character who started out not brave and ended up joining the most reckless and wild faction: Dauntless. As well, the book allows you to relate with the character. However, the reason why I am only giving it three stars is because it is very much like the other Dystopia and it almost feels all too predictable. The plot, and characters are very closely resembled to previous ones like The Hunger Games and it makes the entire story seem like a different version of The Hunger Games or lets say The Maze Runner. This book is too similar and it almost seems like a copycat of the other series. I was not interested to read it in the beginning because I was like "oh it's just another dystopia". I would say that it is a good book for people looking for a book similar to previous dystopias but it is not that different and I would say that the concept of it is very cool and the cover looks amazing, but it gets tiring and boring at some point when there's too many dystopian novels all with similar story lines.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome Read I bought this book a while ago as a novel study. I though it'd be one of those regular old si-fi fantasy books; boy was I wrong. It was a marvellous read and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through, I defiantly recommend this book if you are looking for some si-fi, futuristic, romance type of read. Enjoy!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Divergent I love the idea of the society that is portrayed in this book, but I had a hard time liking the main characters.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay It was an interesting plot, however it seems typical for a dystopian novel where society is organized in a certain way and the main character is somehow a unique case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was hesitant to read this; "It's just another hyped-up YA series". I wasn't in a rush to read this series ... I bought it anyways because it was on sale. My mother actually ended up reading it before me, and she fell in love with it. She's not a big YA reader, so she liked it, I thought it must be good. I'm glad I did! I guess some YA series are hyped-up for a reason.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Addictive novel I read this book two years ago, so maybe my opinion would've changed, but I remember deeply loving this book. The story is addictive, easy to read and the characters were fun to read about. It's overall a great dystopian novel. A bit cliché sometimes, but hey, thirteen year old me didn't mind!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great fun! Definitely not the most skillfully written if we're talking about technical mastery but it was VERY interesting, and held my attention through the whole book. Unfortunately this is by far the best book of the series and if you haven't heard by now, I can tell you that the movies are awful. Quite sad, considering how much fun this first foray into Tris' world was.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this book !!! I love this book so much that i find myself reading it more than I read any of my other books. I love the way the words are nicely written together, and the variety of word choice that was used. Evertime a chapter ended, always left me wanting to read more, even when I couldn't read. This series is one of my favorites because of the character development and how everything is just so different and out of the ordinary. Reading the books, i saw something completely different then the movies, and as always the books are way better! I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for suspense and romance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Liked This was an action packed and strong heroine kind of novel. I liked the characters and the world was interesting. Even though it was action packed parts of the story were slow, Tris tends to repeat her thoughts quite a bit. As with all the divergent books for me, something felt off or wrong about the writing or the story. I know people are often cruel and the characters are certainly true to human nature but the story was just so far out there that it was hard for me to suspend my disbelief. I liked the characters a lot and I felt for them but the feeling was very distracting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! This book was absolutely amazing! It took me a little while to get into the story, but once I didn't I didn't want to put the book down. It was very refreshing to have a female character, especially one who is true to herself and isn't afraid to go with her gut, even if it means letting her family down. Despite the fact that some events were predictable, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Out of the whole Divergent series, this one is by far my favourite as it is the most exciting and the most well-written. It gives off some Hunger Games vibes but the story and its world are completely different. It is a very action packed book in terms of both physical action and dramatic action. Fundamentally, its one of the better books I've read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just Too Much Divergent is an extremely junky read. Sort of like eating a bag of chips. While enjoyable, after it's over, you're left feeling uncomfortably full and wondering why you did that to yourself. It's a good read but it's just too much. It's like watching a Blockbuster action flick and wishing there was just a little bit more of a storyline and not so many car chases and gunshots. Still, it's good. And I think it's good for teens. I'm not sure if I'll continue to read the rest of the trilogy. I think I might actually be better off watching the films.
