The Dollar Dreadful series features modern tales based on traditional London legends of the supernatural. This collection was originally published as Transpontine Drift and was part of a series of 21st century penny dreadfuls which hoped to provide something chilling and pocket sized to read on the way to work. London listing magazine Time Out described the hard copy as 'a pocket horror show.. far from dreadful and worth every penny,' whilst the southwark news referred to them as ‘a dread good read'. the fortean times and guardian were equally keen and bbc radio adapted a couple of the pieces into radio plays as part of their 2010 london season. The stories introduce some of the city’s legends and folklore in a modern context and are aimed at ordinary adult Londoners and visitors who like a spot of history, take pleasure from a bit of a fright when the fancy takes them and enjoy a quirky, sexy, and often humorous, view of the city. Amongst the characters introduced is Queen Rat, a sexy rodent able to transform herself into a raven haired lovely in order to seduce handsome dockside workers. Alongside her you'll find other shape shifters, lorelei's at the lido, pagan estate agents and a basilisk breeding programme. The stories take place in pubs, underground, alongside canals and on housing estates but alongside this everyday city is another london that looks like the familiar streets, tube stations and parks. this collection invites you to take a stroll down those.
