Paul Dombey is an excellent businessman and has the wealth and power to do almost anything. His family life is conducted in a similar way to business. It is calculated and emotionless. He has two children: his young son and older daughter. He cares immensely for the boy but cares very little for his daughter. As Dombey’s heartlessness spreads to other people in his life, he endangers himself with the people he alienates. All the while, the reader wonders if Dombey will ever change his ways. Paul Dombey is a compelling man, but his conceit hinders him. Dombey and Son shows the hopeless fate of a man—and society—that refuses to feel. A poignant societal critique, Dickens’ tale will have readers rooting for the very man they should despise so much.
