Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favourites This book is hilarious whilst profound. That is rarely pulled off. A tour de force. Can't say whether this particular translation is good, but I had no problems with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We're all DQ Trying to write a review of DQ is like trying to chew off your own teeth - we in the modern world are so influenced by this book (and don't even know it) that's impossible to analyse it, much like Hamlet. We think we're reading it, but it's reading us; we think we're judging it, but it's judging us.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A scholar's read. Because this book was rated by literary aficionados from around the world as the best novel ever, I persevered through it. Sometimes hilarious and mostly entertaining it still requires a great deal of intellectual effort to put oneself in the time and place of the author to understand the humor and mores of the day. I found the first part (book) more enjoyable than the second. The copious footnotes were just a distraction for me.
