about

Don’t Waste Your Time is a lively, stimulating departure from the dull-guidebook tradition. It dazzles with 560 colour photos, and a graphic, easy-to-read map for each hike. And this meticulous, 677-page opus is now ultralight gear. Take only the trail directions with you, leave the rest behind. Average trail weight: 67 grams (2.4 oz) per hike. Finally, a hiking guidebook fit for adventure, not just the armchair.

Each of the 145 trips in Don’t Waste Your Time is rated Premier, Outstanding, Worthwhile, or Don’t Do. The book covers Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, Yoho and Waterton Lakes national parks, plus Mt. Robson and Mt. Assiniboine provincial parks. It includes 84 dayhikes, 41 backpack trips, and 20 shoulder-season trips.

A guidebook is essential hiking gear. Shouldn’t it be ultralight? Yes, so you can pack it with you on the trail. That’s why the all new, Ultralight Gear, 7th Edition of Don’t Waste Your Time in the Canadian Rockies, allows you to take pages, not the whole book. It comes in a zip-open, hardshell case (24 x 16.5 x 6.4 cm). The Opinion book contains all the trip descriptions, and most of the photos. Use it at home, in the car, at the trailhead. It provides everything you need to know to choose your next hike. It’s also a trove of inspiration when you’re between trips. But leave it behind when you go hiking. The nine Fact booklets contain the trail directions, including the maps. Pack the one booklet you need, so you can refer to it while hiking. The booklets’ average trail weight is seriously ultralight—a mere 67 grams (2.4 oz) per hike—so you can always have this essential piece of gear with you in the backcountry.

Each Fact booklet is much lighter than any smartphone, tablet or eReader. Not restricted by battery life, the booklets never need recharging, and never die. They won’t break if dropped. Flipping back-and-forth to compare hikes is easy. Photos are impressively big. Text is easy on the eyes. To accurately represent one of the world’s most exciting mountain ranges, shouldn’t a guidebook itself excite? Yes. So the all new, Ultralight Gear, 7th Edition of Don’t Waste Your Time does just that. It tells you about each trail as would a very experienced friend: honestly, specifically, colourfully. With intelligence and humour. With insight and emotion. With your needs at heart. As a result, Don’t Waste Your Time illuminates each trail, empowering you to choose the optimal one for your interests, ability and mood. It offers discerning advice that can boost a day on the trail from “hmm” to “Wow!” The entire book is such a compelling read that you can turn to it anytime for a motivating reminder of why you love to hike.

And whenever you are on the trail, you’ll find the By Vehicle and On Foot directions in Don’t Waste Your Time are carefully crafted—precise, clear, complete—ensuring you spend your weekend or vacation striding instead of searching.

We hope this book compels you to get outdoors more often and stay out longer. Do it to cultivate your wild self. It will give you perspective. Do it because the backcountry teaches simplicity and self-reliance, qualities that make life more fulfilling. Do it to remind yourself why wilderness needs and deserves your protection. A deeper conservation ethic develops naturally in the mountains. And do it to escape the cacophony that muffles the quiet, pure voice within.

Kathy and Craig Copeland are dedicated to each other and to hiking, in that order. Their second date was a 20-mi (32-km) dayhike in Arizona. Since then they haven’t stopped for long. They’ve trekked through much of the world’s vertical topography, including the Nepalese Himalaya, Patagonian Andes, and New Zealand Alps. In Europe, they’...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from How every hiking book should be set up As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, the design of this book (one book for descriptions and separate, smaller books for directions) is excellent, one that every guidebook should follow. The descriptions of each hiking is inspiring while the directions booklets and light, easy to carry and won't be a burden in your backpack on your next trip. However as the subtitle mentions (the Opinionated hikers...) the hikes descriptions, while far more interesting that most guidebooks , are opinionated. Sometimes I agree with these opinions, other times I think they're off their rocker as to what they think is a good hike. That aside, I'd recommend to all levels of hikers since it has inspired a lot of my hiking adventures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Guide Book We bought this set at the beginning of the year and it has lead us to some fabulous hikes. I love that they have separated hikes into smaller books making it easier to take them long with you on a hike

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Back Country Book Done Right!! I bought this book at the beginning of 2016 and it is one of the best things I have ever done. This book is the means to an end in every aspect. If you are a beginner, novice, or expert this book will guide you to where you need to go. There are destinations in a large variety of areas, making the provincial parks and wilderness completely accessible. The directions are easy to follow and the kilometres are extremely accurate. I would highly recommend this book, it will eliminate any excuse to not be outdoors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Prerequisite for the Rockies This book was perfect for planning our two week vacation to the Rockies. It made the trip. We were able to concentrate on premier hikes recommended by the authors. Each of the recommended (follow the boots) hikes we chose in Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Waterton Lakes were outstanding. This book is an asset.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such a great book! This is the only hiking book we take to the rockies! The authors are our all time favourite guide book authors. The fact that they rate each trail is a huge help! When you've only got a limited time this book helps you focus on the premier hikes in the area. Most books you're just guessing which hikes you should do. Their trail descriptions are awesome and easy to follow. Don't mess around, just buy this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Have! I have the last edition of the DWYT but this new format is a huge bonus and will make the pack lighter while doing a hike or back-pack. This innovative, well researched, beautifully designed and highly useful product has several new hikes in this edtion that I can't wait to try! I appreciate the smart, entertaining and informative writing in the opinion piece that makes DWYT stand out. This edition is also highly engaging with the beautiful photo montage throughout and the writing throughout is easy to follow. Whether one is a beginner or an experienced hiker or whether you have other editions of DWYT I'd highly recommend this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Refreshing (and useful) Format for a Guidebook As a reader and user of the prior editions of Don't Waste Your Time, this new 7th edition is a very welcomed change to the traditional guidebook format. Take the individual booklet on your hike to reduce pack size and weight, leaving the other materials at home, and then enjoy the opinions book to get a personal perspective from the professional hikers themselves. If you're unable to get out without technology, the case fits a small tablet and you can be confident that your items are protected. A very well designed product and we're looking forward to using it this season and in the future to make the most of our time (and certainly not waste it) in the Canadian Rockies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New edition I have just received my copy of this new version of an old favorite. I love the unique and innovative format with a basic guide for home use and a series of nine portable booklets for use when hiking. The book is very well illustrated - a great advance over previous editions. The mini sections, each with 10-20 detailed trail descriptions, will be ideal to slip one or two into my pack for a hike or a weekend. The full book can be used for planning my hikes. I highly recommend this book for every hiker's library.
