The story is set in the old parts of Wellington, New Zealand in the 1990's, before the motorway was put through. Thomas Young-Felo, the middle ages proprietor of a second hand bookshop has had a sad life. He had won a scholarship to Cambridge University but made a bad marriage, abandoned his studies, his wife and young daughter and returned to New Zealand to live in the shadow of regret. Kate de Bris is a young school teacher who comes into his shop to buy an old book to prop up the leg of a table in a school play. Kate had lost her father at an early age. Thomas and Kate are immediately attracted to each other but there are many adventures to go through before they can come together. They can only do so in the mystical poetical world of dreams.
