A man mysteriously vanishes on his way to work in Fjällbacka. His wife and children have no idea where he could have gone. Four months later, Patrik Hedstrom at the Tanumshede police force gets a call: the man has been found murdered, frozen underneath the ice.

The case takes a sudden turn when it emerges one of the dead man's friends, author Christian Thydell, has been receiving anonymous death threats. Christian is on the brink of making it big with his breakthrough novel The Mermaid. When he receives another ominous message during the launch party, Christian breaks down and shows the letters to Erica, who is pregnant with twins.

She has long suspected that something is tormenting Christian and ignores his pleas to leave the police out of it. Erica sneaks one letter away to show Patrik, who instantly realizes the danger Christian is in. This is someone carrying a deep hatred for Christian, someone confused and unstable who wouldn't hesitate in turning the threats into reality.

And when yet another man is found murdered, the police realize there is a connection between the killings, which leads them into the dead men's pasts...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyable Reading I haven't read Camilla Lackberg before this book and I have to say I really enjoyed her writing. The beginning of the book introduces a lot of characters and not having the benefit of knowing some of the regular ones means there are a lot to keep track of. But once I got going the book is very hard to put down and kept me up longer than I wanted to on some nights. The mystery is creepy and elusive and I we are kept until the very end before its divulged, which made this an extra enjoyable read. I definitely want to read the next in the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good. As always; I have been an avid reader of mystery-suspense novels for very many years. I have read all of Camilla Lackberg.s books that have been translated into English. The Patrick Hedstrom and Erica Falk books and all her short stories. If anyone deserves the title of "Queen of Crime writers" it is Camilla Lackberg

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The drowning What is up with leaving the reader like this? When I purchase a novel I fully expect it to have a beginning, a middle and an end. What a disappointment! And what s transparent ploy to sell more books...a little bit of Gaby the greedy publisher rearing up here...as we say in Canada...what a bummer!...but I really enjoy your books nonetheless!
