Excerpt from Dublin Castle

To illustrate the reigns of the Castellans it was necessary to make a sort of running com mentary on the events of Irish history - history which has been written with varying aims - with political purpose by some writers, and without the knowledge which recent work in the Record Office has made accessible for instance, Lingard minimises the massacre of Protestants in Ulster in 1641, while many writers exaggerate, even to the point of absurdity, that terrible calamity. Clarendon is silent as to the Glamorgan Treaty, which is a guiding light in the study of that crisis of our Constitution, while, to come to minor matters, that very clever and interesting author, Mr. Spencer Walpole, shows a nescience of the topography of Dublin when he talks of the views to be gained from that very minor mound.
