Their old prophetical books, which were held in the highest esteem by all the people, had spoken in stirring strains of a Messiah who was to come. These books spoke of Him as a Prophet, like unto Moses, but wiser than Moses; as the Son of David, who was to sit upon David's throne for ever; as the Priest higher than Aaron, who was head of the whole sacerdotal order. To prepare the minds of His countrymen for the advent of Messiah, a forerunner had appeared in the person of John the Baptist. As has been already stated, John was a kinsman of Jesus, for his mother Elizabeth was cousin to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and it was to the house of Elizabeth that Mary went when she knew that she was with child by the Holy Ghost, and the unborn babe in Elizabeth's womb leaped when the voice of Mary sounded in the ears of his mother. Zacharias, the husband of Elizabeth, went into the temple to burn incense before the Lord, and there appeared unto him the angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
